Hearts may lack
the strength in depth to go one step further this season despite the fact
that they are regarded as the top team outside the Old Firm. The Tynecastle
club ended the season in third place with fewer points separating them from
Celtic than there was between the Hoops and champions Rangers. Now the general
feeling in Edinbugh is that Hearts can break the stranglehold the Old Firm
have on Scottish football and challenge for a top-two sport.

A second Champions
League place up for grabs is an added incentive and a top three finish is
a realistic target, although for a club the size of Hearts it's a shame
that they haven't given their manager Jim Jefferies more money to spend
in order to challenge the Old Firm. In fact Hearts haven't signed a single
player in the close season. It also looks as if star striker Stephane Adam
will be sold due to lack of funds. Considering there is a Champions' League
place up for grabs, Hearts have shown no ambition whatsoever.

They finished
third last time, gaining a UEFA Cup spot in the process, although they didn't
exactly have a great campaign. It was fairly inconsistent and they never
really proved a threat to either of the Old Firm. However, they are still
the team the Old Firm fear the most from the rest of the Division. Jefferies,
though, seems to thrive in adversity and it wouldn't be a surprise at all
if Hearts were yet again the team to win the Division without Rangers and
Celtic.
