Talk about taking
over a sinking ship... Alan Buckley became the first league manager to bite
the dust this season, paying the price for a lame start after just 3 games.
It's not as if he'd done badly during his second stint in charge at Blundell
Park - but a run of twelve winless matches streching back to last season just
wasn't good enough.
It had looked
like an uphill struggle ever since star striker Lee Ashcroft was sold to
Division Two barnstormers Wigan for £325,000. When finances dictate
to sell your best player, which you then can't re-invest the cash in a readymade
replacement, Grimsby start to look like small fish in an increasingly wealthy
pond. Buckley had already taken the club back into the first Division for
the second time, so maybe his supply of miracles ran out.

Even the experienced
Lennie Lawrence, who arrives in Cleethorpes with excellent credentials,
admits he can't see where the goals are going to come from. So expect a
loan signing iminently, if he can't open that chequebook. The
club made only one new signing over the summer, taking experienced centre-back
Paul Raven on a free transfer from West Brom.
Fans will be
looking to the likes of winger Kevin Donovan, former QPR frontman Bradley
Allen, and midfield dynamo Paul Groves to keep the Mariner's heads above
water. Blundell Park will certainly be under seige again, but this time
you just can't see them surviving.
