The arrival of
coach Jean Tigana further enhances Fulham's chances of realising owner Mohamed
al-Fayed's dream of Premiership football at the Cottage. New
signings Louis Saha and John Collins will have too much class for most of
this division and a good season looks in store for all at SW6.
Tigana, though,
could be excused for feeling the pressure even before the start of the season.
He knows as well as anyone that a salary of about half a million and virtually
unlimited resources to buy players comes not so much with strings attached
but with a thick rope tied to the trigger of a large cannon. Al-Fayed does
not have a history of feeling comfortable with failure (as in missing out
on promotion to the Premiership) and Tigana faces a make-or-break nine months.

John
Collins
|
The talented
French coach has made only two significant purchases, 21-year-old former
Newcastle striker Louis Saha from Metz for £2.1 million, a deal that was
financed by selling Geoff Horsfield to Birmingham for £2.25m; and
John Collins, the Scottish midfielder who played for Tigana at Monaco, for
£2.2 million. Tigana regards Collins as something of a model for the rest
of his squad. Fulham have also signed Luis Boa Morte from Southampton, and
Fabrice Fernandes, from Rennes, both on a season's loan.
Fulham, ninth
last season, already had the basis of a very good side at Craven Cottage
last season, and in Collins and Saha they have signed players with Premiership
experience. They have the strength in depth to challenge for the First Division
title, although they will face stiff competition from the likes of Birminghamm,
Wimbledon, and Blackburn.
