UEFA Cup: Chelsea v St Gallen: Thursday

On paper, this UEFA Cup first round first leg should have been a stroll in the park for Chelsea - but then the events of the last 48 hours unfolded. And now a managerless squad of superstars with one win in 10 games face a slippery away jaunt into the unknown, with Tuesday's unforeseen dismissal of Gianluca Vialli preying all-too-heavily on their minds.

UEFA Cup: Rapid Bucharest v Liverpool: Thursday

History is on Liverpool's side prior to this UEFA Cup tie at the Stadionul Guilesti in Bucharest. Rapid have yet to beat an English side and Liverpool have yet to lose against Romanians. And this Rapid Bucharest team have started so poorly that coach Anghel Iordanescu reportedly demanded that the players' wages be cut.

Olympic Football: 13-30 September

As one of the first team sports included in the Games, football will have the highest overall attendance of any sport during the next few weeks, including athletics - and competition will be fierce with 16 teams in the men's tournament facing off in four groups of four before heading straight into the knockout phase.

Sheffield United v Blackburn Rovers: Friday

Rovers had a good record at Bramhall Lane in the early 90s and thrashed United 5-0 as recently as April 1 at Ewood Park, so they should feel confident of another win here.

Port Vale v Stoke City: Sunday

Vale have not lost at home to arch rivals Stoke since 1993 but they haven't won against them for four years - so back the draw as the most likely outcome, especially as this series normally produces a tight game - the last ten of these derbies have averaged 1.5 goals per game.
