Alex Nyarko
A summer of turmoil at Goodison which has seen the departure of top trio Nicky Barmby, Don Hutchison and John Collins has piled the pressure on former Rangers manager Walter Smith. But there is hope. Smith is about as streetwise as they come in this business and as PR masterstrokes go, signing Gazza and one of the most instantly recognisable stars of Euro 2000, will guarantee the usual electric atmosphere at Goodison Park
Niclas Alexandersson

Smith as used his experience to buy quietly and wisely, and while the one big name (Gazza) and the other big stylist (Xavier) he has landed will grab all the attention, it's the other signings that will offer Everton real hope. Of course, Gascoigne isn't just there to make up the numbers, even if he finds his contribution limited to substitute cameos: he'll offer Everton a much-needed extra option when they struggle to break teams down.

And, together with Xavier, he'll also add a splash of colour to a team who have failed to sparkle over the last couple of years You can neither miss nor ignore Portugal's 6ft 5in attacking defender. If dying his hair, together with his finely manicured beard and moustache, peroxide blond at Euro 2000 was something of an advertising execs dream, the handball that effectively lost Portugal the semi-final (and his ensuing protests) has ensured that Xavier is now a household name - well on the Algarve anyway.

Thomas Gravesen

Alessandro Pistone - whose signing from Newcastle puts a question mark over the future of Michael Ball - will bolster an ageing defence which has coped bravely in recent times but would surely have started to fall apart soon. Along with other new defensive capture Steve Watson, Pistone will give his new team extra attacking options as well. And the tough-tackling Thomas Gravesen and Alex Nyarko will easily fill the physical void left by Hutchison. Gravesen has already got one red card to his name, having taken on half the Blackburn side... in a friendly.
