With the arrival
of new boss Alan Smith and a more sound financial footing under new chairman
Simon Jordan, things should start to improve for the Eagles with a comfortable
mid-table finish the most likely outcome.
Jordan, though,
has outlined his burning desire to restore the club's position in the top
echelons of English football, acting swiftly to replace boss Steve Coppell,
who departed by mutual consent after three heavy pre-season friendly defeats,
so a shot at the play-offs should not be ruled out.
Smith, the
former Palace boss who ironically replaced Coppell in 1993 - and was in
turn replaced by Coppell again two years later - has been given the task
of taking Palace out of their financial and footballing doldrums and leading
them back to the Premiership. And Jordan insists: "The first task now is
to put Crystal Palace back in its proper position. We are the fourth biggest
club in London."
Easier said
than done, although Smith is a shrewd campaigner who should be able to get
the best out of a young squad peppered with a few choice seasoned professionals,
including the swashbuckling Neil Ruddock, signed from West Ham for an undisclosed
fee.
Fifteenth last
season, Palace will benefit from the arrival of 'the Finnish Michael Owen'
- Mikael Forssell, on loan from Chelsea for a second time, and the Arsenal
pair Tommy Black and Julian Gray. The key men for the Eagles will be Clinton
Morrison, Hayden Mullins and, provided he stays free of injury and suspension,
Ruddock.
