Alan Curbishley
defied the odds by taking Charlton back into the top flight the season after
they were relegated. Highly-respected, his side won the first division at
a canter, but spent most of the 1998-99 season being patronised because they
delighted everyone by daring to play good football. Sadly - like Barnsley
and Swindon before them - they didn't do it well enough to survive.
This time a
couple of shrewd signings may make the vital difference. Claus Jensen, newly
arrived from Bolton, will take some of the creative burden away from Mark
Kinsella and John Robinson and, more significantly, add extra firepower
to their midfield.
 |
|
Jonatan Johansson
|
Jensen likes
to get forward - Charlton will be more than happy if he matches last season's
return of six league goals in 42 starts.
Goals, though,
shouldn't be too much of a problem: the signing of Jonatan Johansson from
Rangers for £3.75m fee was perhaps the most astute piece of business done
by any Premiership club this summer. Johansson, despite never establishing
himself in the first team at Ibrox, boasts an impressive record of a goal
every three games.
 |
|
Radostin
Kishishev
|
And with Andy
Hunt, Graham Stuart and Martin Pringle being no mean goal poachers themselves,
Charlton are far from toothless. Which is just as well, because despite
the addition of ball-playing Bulgarian Radostin Kishishev, their defence
remains a problem - Curbishley hasn't spent all summer trying to tempt Michael
Duberry to the Valley for nothing. So with the lack of a truly commanding
presence at the back, Charlton fans better get used to the sight of Dean
Kiely or new recruit Ben Roberts picking the ball out of the net at regular
intervals.
