Celtic finished
an embarrassing 21 points behind Rangers last season. A change in manager,
in Martin O'Neill, will give the Celtic faithful some hope of better things
to come, but it's hard to see how they can make up the deficit to surpass
Rangers. Especially as Celtic have lost two of their best players in striker
Mark Viduka, who went to Leeds for £7m, and Marc Rieper, who has retired due
to persistent injury problems.
However,
they can be expected to finish a lot closer to Rangers this
time - as O'Neill's sides are famed for their battling qualities.
It's hard to see Celtic dropping points against the lesser sides
as they did last season. The only two additions to their squad
have been Chris Sutton, who was signed for £6million from Chelsea,
and Joos Valgaeren from Roda JC for £3.8m.

O'Neill has
admitted that Celtic are nowhere near good enough defensively, and that
improvements must be made if they are to even think about challenging Rangers.
The return of Henrik Larsson will be a bonus as he is a world-class striker,
and it will be interesting to see how he and Sutton fare upfront. Larsson,
if back to his best following his injury, will take a bit of stopping for
the golden boot award. Paul Lambert remains a steadying influence in the
midfield, while Jackie McNamara and Alan Stubbs are a touch of class at
the back. Other than that, Celtic lack genuine world class strength in depth.
Jonathan Gould
was less than convincing between the sticks last season, which is why, at
the time of writing, O'Neill is chasing Manchester United reserve keeper
Mark Bosnich; Olivier Tebily is unreliable; Stephane Mahe is too volatile;
Rafael hasn't look particularly promising; Regi Blinker is on his way out;
and Eyal Berkovic lacks consistency.

Celtic's pre-season
has higlighted the problems. Tebily and Rafael have both been exposed at
the back, and Bordeaux's 4-2 victory at Celtic Park demonstrated just how
vunerable O'Neill's side are at the back. Celtic will be hoping Rangers
get embroiled in a long-drawn out Champions' League campaign, which that
is their only hope of capturing the league title.
