On paper Rovers
have the best squad outside the Premiership and have plenty of financial backing,
but the players still have a lot to prove following last season's poor showing
by the then pre-season title favourites. However in Graeme Souness they have
a manager who will not accept second best and should push hard for one of
the automatic promotion berths.
The fact that
Egil Ostenstad is 10-1 joint-favourite to be the First Division's top scorer
underlines Rovers status as genuine promotion contenders, although there
are many who feel that Souness must prove himself as a boss if Blackburn
are to be promoted.
Nevertheless,
the ex-Liverpool and Scotland star has made two excellent signings in Craig
Hignett (£2.25 million from Barnsley) and John Curtis (£1.5
million from Manchester United), as well as adding valuable experience in
Stig Bjornebye, for a bargain £500,000 from Souness's old club Liverpool.

Out have gone
Per Frandsen (Bolton, £1.6m), Callum Davidson (Leicester, £1.75m), Leam
Richardson (Bolton, £50,000), and Wayne Gill (Tranmere, free). The key players
are likely to be Hignett, Curtis, Matt Jansen, and Alan Kelly. Rovers should
easily improve on last season's 11th place and finish in the top six, but
the big question is does Souness have the ability to shape them into a team
capable of getting into the Premiership? Only time will tell.
