The Blues have
endured play-off heartbreak for two
seasons in a row and a lot will depend upon the performance of new-boy Geoff
Horsfield, signed from Fulham for a club record £2.25million, and how they
adapt to the loss of Gary Rowett (£3 million to Leicester) at the back.
Rowett's departure could prove more decisive than Horsfield's arrival.
Nevertheless,
the Blues should be there or thereabouts come May. And as long as the 26-year-old
Horsfield, who scored 32 goals in 74 appearances for the Cottagers, fulfills
his massive potential then automatic promotion is a possibility. Trevor
Francis' side finished fifth last season, eventually losing to Barnsley
in the play-offs.

Confidence
is high, though, and the fact that central defender David Holdsworth has
signed a one-year extension to his current contract, keeping him at St Andrews
until 2004, suggests that team spirit is excellent. The twin brother of Bolton's
Dean turns 32 on the eve of the new season, and joins Martin Grainger, Bryan
Hughes, Ian Bennett and Michael Johnson who have all signed contract extensions
with the St Andrews club recently. Blues chairman David Sullivan said: ''It
just goes to show what a committed bunch of lads we currently have at the
club."
The signing
of the experienced David Burrows from Coventry on a free transfers and Danny
Sonner from Sheff Wed is another major plus for Francis.
