Villa, even by their standards, surpassed themselves during the close-season.
Backbiting and squabbling left the smallest "big club" in Europe in a state
of inner turmpoil. And, as if that has not been bad enough, they have had
their fingers burnt in the Intertoto Cup.
They have clearly
taken a wrong turn or two since their wretched FA Cup final defeat against
Chelsea. If it has not been Paul Merson throwing a wobbly, it has been Julian
Joachim. If it has not been Ugo Ehiogu wanting out, it has been Gareth Southgate.
Benito Carbone has jumped ship to Bradford without so much as a backward
glance. And John Gregory's talent for making enemies remains unsurpassed.

Ehiogu and
Southgate now say they will honour their contracts but that is more to do
with neither player finding a club big enough to satisfy his ego rather
than them overcoming their dissatisfaction with life at Villa Park. As Villa
are discovering, being the biggest club in the midlands does not guarantee
acceptance as a proper "big club". In Premiership terms they belong very
much in the category B list and, while they may strenuously deny it, the
inferiority complex is threatening to tear them apart.

Around 20,000
season tickets were sold last year, but only 14,500 have been taken this
summer, fewer than Charlton Athletic, Derby County or Ipswich Town. Given
that Villa have one of the biggest catchment areas in the country, those
figures should alarm everyone associated with the club, not least their
accountants. The club made a loss of £4.8m in the last financial year compared
with a profit of £20.2m in 1998-99. The vultures are hovering. Gregory is
the 6-4 second favourite to become the first Premiership manager to be sacked
- only Chris Hutchings of Bradford City is ahead of him at 8-11 - and Ellis
is likely to be less than pleased with Gregory if the FA Cup finalists make
a poor start, especially after investing in the charismatic but inconsistent
David Ginola.
