Ken
Buchanan is the first living Scottish boxer to make it into the International
Boxing Hall of Fame and, more significantly, one of the
few fighters in the history of the lightweight division to genuinely hurt
Roberto 'Hands of Stone' Duran.
Born in Edinburgh
in 1945, Buchanan began boxing at age 8 when his father sneaked him into an
Edinburgh boxing club. He turned professional in 1965, and within three years
had claimed both the Scottish and British lightweight titles. He finished his
career in 1983 with a record of 62-8, with 28 knockouts.
On June 26, 1972,
he gave Duran one hell of a fight for the world title in New York. A low blow
after the bell sounded the end of the 13th prevented him from continuing, but
Buchanan had already won the hearts of the American public with one of the bravest
performances ever seen in the ring. Duran still rates it as one of the toughest
fights of his career.
The battling Scot
also distinguished himself in an epic 15 round scrap for the world title with
the fearsome Ismael Laguna in front of a hostile crowd in San Juan in September
1970. Buchanan won by decision. He also went the distance with Jim Watt to win
the British title in Glasgow in January 1973, and fought a bloody victory to
take the European title from notoriously ruthless Italian champion Antonio Puddu
in Cagliari, Italy in 1974.
