11- Maize and Sugar Crop Disease:
- Number of section staff is 43 members.
B- Activities:
- Working with the national breeding program to screen late downy mildew resistance maize varieties and cultivars.
- Survey and eradication of common smut on maize, loose smut on sugar cane, and brown smut on sorghum.
C- Achievement:
A highlight of achievements has been the introduction of late wilt resistance in the breeding program for maize. Late wilt, a disease caused by, Cephalosporium maydis is considered the most serious disease of maize in Egypt. The wide release of six resistant cultivars has significantly reduced infection and increased productivity to approximately 3 tons/ feddan.
Efficacy trials have shown systemic fungicides to be effective in controlling downy mildew in both maize and sorghum.
