Future Direction
The PPATHRI has many strategies to continue to meet the challenges facing Egyptian agriculture. An integrated disease management approach is encouraged, to approach disease problems as a holistic challenge to crop management. This will help to maintain high productivity while reducing risks of pollution in an energy and input sustainable manner.
The overall tactics include improving the technology of identifying sources of resistance to serious diseases in the process of developing varieties. Wheat, barley, maize, cotton, rice and other economically important vegetable crops have been identified as a priority to Egypt for continued emphasis in the search for disease resistance.
Another tactic is to develop molecular biology and tissue culture techniques for application in developing resistant varieties and production of disease-free seed material.
Biocontrol technology and methods will be used more for sustainable, low hazard disease management.
The institute's important task of providing a foundation for rational fungicide use through research into their effects on the environment, cropping system and public health should be continued.
The future of Egyptian agriculture and the Plant Pathology Research Institute contains many challenges along with great opportunities for meaningful contribution.
