16- Ornamental Plant Disease:
- Number of section staff is 17 members.
B- Activities:
-Surveying and studying diseases are attacking important plants.
- Conducting research designed to develop control methods to ensure high quality exported plant material.
- Examining imported seed and transplants to avoid the introduction of new pathogens.
C- Achievement:
During the last decade, the importance of this group of plants has increased dramatically, and with it, additional attention to diseases has followed. This meant disease surveys carried out during recent years have resulted in uncovering many new pathogen problems. From the table below, the large number and selection of host plants in this group and pathogens can be seen.
A few specific examples include cumin wilt, which has been successfully managed by the use of fungicidal seed dressings, reducing infection by more than 50%. Wilt disease in gladiolus and dipping corms in a set of fungicides has dramatically controlled iris. The survival increase of plants was 300 to 500% over check treatments. Lastly, rosette plants are another example where the use of seed disinfectants to control soilborne diseases reduced disease up to 80% depending on the season and level of soil contamination.
The following table lists the important plant disease on Egypt's economically important ornamental and medicinal plant species, which the research institute has identified and recorded.
