Sitaram: i have attended a Guyanese mandir in brooklyn for past 6 yrs
Insight: Nice. Ever been to the Ganesh temple?
Sitaram: yes... I rented and watched all 28 episodes of ramanand sagars ramayan
Sitaram: no.. I heard about it.. but I live across street fro bhuvaneshwar mandir
Sitaram: so.. I just go to Bhuvaneshwar
Insight: I take it your from Guyana?
Sitaram: no indian ancestry... dutch, irish, british
Sitaram: i was raised with no religion
Sitaram: by nominally protestant parents who never took me to church even once
Insight: Nice. You adopted Hinduism.
Sitaram: would you like to visit my website.. on hinduism.. with pictures and bhajan music
Insight: Yes tell me.
Sitaram: and about 200 pages of reading... different.. interesting topics religion
Sitaram: hold on
Insight: Here is one: http://members.aol.com/classyoga
Insight: You might like that site too.
Lamentation: good morning..
Insight: Namaste!
Lamentation: I believe in sai baba
Lamentation: namaste namaste
Insight: What do you mean "I believe."
Lamentation: I follow his teachings..
Insight: Req: Nice.
Lamentation: "help ever, hurt never"
Lamentation: things like that
Lamentation: simple things..
Insight: I have known many Sai devotees in Trinidad.
Lamentation: do you know of him?
Lamentation: oh really..
Insight: Req: Of course.
Lamentation: he is very impressive..
Insight: I'm Saivite Hindu.
Lamentation: that's great..
Lamentation: did you know they found him in the bible?
Insight: Req: I rather not get into that.
Lamentation: lol..
Lamentation: okay..
Lamentation: i understand.
Insight: Anything about Hinduism--we should talk about?
Lamentation: so..what's the plan today.
Lamentation: do you study hinduism?
Insight: Many today are interested in so-called "yoga." Of course, it is all Hinduism.
Insight: Req: As a Hindu, yes, of course.
Lamentation: i meditate..
Insight: Raja Yoga.
Lamentation: i consider hindus as being "gnostic spiritualist"
Insight: Req: You might say that.
Lamentation: yeah..that is why hinduism tries to imcorprate every aspect of life
Insight: Shall we talk about some of the basics of Sanatan Dharma?
Insight: Of course, that is the original (and still used) name.
Insight: Anyone can, of course, become a Hindu.
Lamentation: hinduism = sanatan dharma
Insight: Don't have to be from India lol
Lamentation: i like to believe to be a hindu, one must be a christian, muslim, buddhist, and a jew
Lamentation: user...glad to hear it
Insight: Req: That I find a tad naive.
Lamentation: why is that?
Insight: A Christian is not a Hindu.
Lamentation: we don't discard any faith..
Lamentation: oh no..
Insight: Req: Discard no--but do not include as Hindus.
Lamentation: i mean to be a hindu..one must accept jesus in a certain way also..
Lamentation: accept buddha..
Lamentation: krishna..
Lamentation: it's all the same to us..for the most part.
Insight: Req: Just respect the Divinty of all--but that is very diff. than being a Christian.
Insight: There are many paths--yes--but all paths are not the same.
Lamentation: oh I know..
Lamentation: my friends are christians..they have tried to convert me
Insight: See! That is the point.
Lamentation: i know I know..
Lamentation: i know the bible more then they..
Insight: Sita and User jump in--don't mean to leave you out.
Lamentation: that is why the didn't convert me
Partaker:: yes requiem, tell more
Partaker:: tell about your outlook
Lamentation: did you guys know the bible speaks of reincarnation?
Lamentation: in many places...
Partaker:: you are right I feel
Lamentation: pave..good morning
Insight: One of our greeting "Namaste" really says alot about Hinduism
Lamentation: has anybody in here every read the Koran, Bible, or the thora?
Insight: "I bow to You." because my soul and your soul are one.
Lamentation: Namaste..yes the two hands represent the opposites..
Insight: Req: How about some Hindu scripture?
Lamentation: i read the Gita..
Partaker:: yes that is a great way of greeting
Lamentation: i am trying to write my version of the Mahabharat...
Insight: So, we (Hindus)recognize that we are the soul.
Insight: And we define that soul--Satchidananda.
Lamentation: yes...God is the ocean and we are the waves..
Insight: Truth/Light/Energy and Love.
Lamentation: we live for a short while, free and fast..and crash against the shores..
Lamentation: and we go under and do it again
Insight: We, of course, cover up this realization so....
Insight: this is where "religion" or "yoga" comes in as we "link-back" or "yoke" to the spirit.
Insight: So, all Hindus (to one degree or another) life a spiritual lifestyle following the various yogas
Lamentation: i don't understand..how is it a weak link..
Insight: Lots of people talk about "yoga" but very few understand what it is.
Lamentation: it's often the same..but thought in many different ways
Insight: "religio" means "to link-back"
Lamentation: i don't know any hindus my age who study hinduism or meditate
Insight: Just like "yuj" the root for "yoga" means "to yoke."
Lamentation: wow..
Insight: Of course, the spiritual journey is very similar in all religions.
Lamentation: didn't know that either.
Insight: Ethics and devotions are first--Hindus call this Karma and Bhakti Yoga.
Lamentation: so the religions are the rivers and God is the ocean..they all lead to him
Lamentation: sanadhna
Insight: Req: Yes good analogy.
Sitaram: sadhana
Lamentation: yeah..that..
Lamentation: sorry..i cant' spell that well
Insight: Raja Yoga or meditation is next (Hatha Yoga helps to prepare for this).
Sitaram: thats ok
Insight: And, Jnana or Enlightenment is the fruit.
Lamentation: i take it you pratice alof of yoga..
Insight: Req: Again, all Hindus do whether it be Bhakti Yoga, etc.
Insight: Sita: Tell me about the temple.
Sitaram: Bhuvaneshwar Mandir....
Insight: Namaste Prem--love.
Lamentation: okay
Insight: What deities are there?
Sitaram: Prakash Gossai is Pandit.... on a big celebration.. like Sivaratri.. two hundred people migh
Sitaram: might come
Sitaram: when Prakash is in Canada or Triniadad or traveling ..doing Ram Yugyas...
Sitaram: then.... sometimes only 20 or 30 come
Insight: Sita: Do they do regular pujas?
Lamentation: back..i was checking out sita ram's web site.
Sitaram: and... mandir opens around 8 am sunday mornings....
Insight: Sita: Only sundays?
Sitaram: and people take turns singing Bhajans.... with nice tabla player... and harmonium
Sitaram: well.. sundays... but also Janammastmi Shivaratri Ramnaumi.... Novaratri.... Holika... Pagw
Sitaram: pagwa
Sitaram: you know.. something special....
Sitaram: but always sunday...
Sitaram: then there are weddings sometimes...
Lamentation: sitaram...that's a nice picture..is that you?
Sitaram: and sometimes people will have special 3 day Ram Yugya or 5 day.. or even 7 day
Sitaram: yes.. that is me
Lamentation: good man...
Sitaram: and picture on wall .. is me at age 18
Lamentation: well guys..i have a final exam today..i must take my leave..
Sitaram: bye requiem
Lamentation: it was nice talking to you all...
Lamentation: god bless..
Lamentation: om sai ram..
Lamentation: hare krishna
Sitaram: hare bol
Sitaram: om sai ram
Lamentation: hare hare..
Sitaram: and... there is always puja.. with 4 to 6 people around havan kund...
Sitaram: and there is Katah or sermon around 10 or 10:30
Sitaram: and ...finishing up around 11:30 to 12:30
Sitaram: but sometimes.. there is meal afterwards....
Sitaram: so.. that is mandir...
Insight: Sounds very similar Sita. I spent time in T'dad.
Sitaram: this pandit is clever.. he has a second havan kund for the children...
Sitaram: so they will learn to do it...
Sitaram: and... everyone lines up to make an offering to Agni....after recitation of Gayatri
Sitaram: and.. at end... everyone lines up.. and takes a turn... doing Aarti with the lamp...
Sitaram: and.. he also... has a blackboard.. and is always illustrating Katah with diagrams...
Sitaram: or.. Hindi words.... etc
Partaker:: can I email you inlight?
Sitaram: there is a lovely old saying in india.. you must have heard it
Insight: Sita: You lost me on that story.
Sitaram: a saint can see saintliness even in the worst sinner
Insight: Yes User anytime.
Sitaram: but... a sinner sees sinfulness... even in the holiest saint
Partaker:: thanks inlight
Insight: Sita: That is true, but I didn't get that message from the story.
Sitaram: simply... if every religion ... is a path to God.. then Mormonism is a path as well...
Sitaram: does not Lord Krsna say... how.. all worship comes to Him,.. even if the devotees are unawar
Insight: Sita: I don't agree that "every" path is a complete path to spiritual reality.
Sitaram: and.. in Tirupati... in Temple of Sri Venkatesera.. an inscription on one wall says...
Insight: Can't be.
Sitaram: all worship..everywhere.. comes to ME...
Sitaram: no.. certainly.. not every path is equally... efficacious...
Insight: Sita: That is a loaded gun--that the Hare Krishnas have perverted.
Sitaram: but.. not every individual is suited to the most efficient path...
Insight: Sita: That I would agree with.
Sitaram: well.. poor old vivekenanda came and went.. long before Prahbupad
Sitaram: amongst some of the strict Saivites....
Sitaram: most notably.. one who lived in Sri lanka
Sitaram: in last century...
Insight: In those moments, I sometimes say "Christianity shows the greatest of God."
Insight: "Even the young souls have a place to pray."
Sitaram: and wrote pamphlets against the christian missionary attacks
Sitaram: the belief is expressed that.. those who are incapable of the pure worship
Sitaram: of Lord Shiva
Sitaram: undergo may rebirths.. and practice many other different religions...
Insight: I'm Saivite.
Sitaram: until they are spiritually ready for birth into the Saivite faith...
Sitaram: well.. I admire that belief...
Sitaram: it seems to make God out as being very merciful and compassionate
Sitaram: you know.. last year.. on Shivaratri...
Insight: Again, there is great benefit in adhereing to one of the sects.
Sitaram: it also happened to be ash wednesday...
Insight: Sita: Yes, that was a nice "coincidence."
Sitaram: so.. in afternoon.. I went to St. Patricks in NYC.. and got ash on my forehead
Sitaram: but.. each priest.. on his vestment.. had pattern of upside down dove
Sitaram: which looked EXACTLY LIKE TRISULA
Insight: Nice!
Sitaram: so.. I came back to mandir... and added ashes for Lord Sivas markings...
Sitaram: tilak
Insight: Does that mean they take on greed, anger and lust?
Insight: Little irreverant humor there.
Sitaram: well.. we all try our best....
Sitaram: tulsidas... the six enemies.. kam krod lob mod madha matsarya
Sitaram: my poor old brain always gets mixed up
Insight: Anybody celebrate Pongal or Makara Shankranti.
Sitaram: i cant name the ten commandments
Sitaram: i cant recite the 12 apostles
Sitaram: and I try to remember.... the nine devotional excellences...
Sitaram: Sravan Kirtana Smarana Padasevana Arcana
Insight: How about the Yamas and Niyamas?
Sitaram: Vandana shakya dasya atmanivedana
Sitaram: but.. I get mixed up
Insight: That is a good basic ethical code that Hindus live by.
Sitaram: so.. if one day.. I meet the Lord.. like Shabiri.. whatever His form..
Sitaram: i can look Him in the eye.. and honestly say.. I tried my best.. to find out Who...
Sitaram: and What He is.. and What He wants...
Insight: Sita: Isvara is everywhere--Sanatan Dharma.
Sitaram: and.. given my life circumstances.. I had to do it mostly on my own..
Sitaram: just like in Ragupati Ragava Raja Ram Patite bhavana...
Insight: Sita: That makes one very strong and not easily misled.
Sitaram: You are Ishwara You are ALlah.. you are the same to all
Sitaram: this was Ghandigi's favorite bhajan.. I am told
Sitaram: so.. that was first bhajan that I learned to sing...
Insight: Sita: To the Muslims Allah represents the absolute. Isvara is personal aspect.
Partaker:: namaste inlight sitaram glad to have listened to you both
Sitaram: bye bye user
Insight: Namaste User Prem.
Sitaram: namaste
Insight: Me too Sita thanks for the great! chat--Jai Sanatan Dharma.!
Partaker:: bye bye
Sitaram: somewhere I once read... God is like an infinite circle.. whose CENTER is everywhere.. and w
Sitaram: whose circumference or boundaries.. limits.. are nowhere
