I dont really believe that anyone can change their sexual orientation... which is manifested in ones "fantasy life"..... one can abstain...not act out... but that fantasy orientation continues regardless.. and Jesus said.. "If you think the deed in your heart... you are already guilty.. regarding adultery...
also... im sure the sin of pride or anger is no more or less sinful that homosexuality.... Jesus said "If you call someone Raca..Fool .. you are guilty of hell fire....
St. Seraphim of Sarov,.. the last saint canonized in Russia before the Revolution said.... "Save yourself, and a THOUSAND people around you will be saved"....
I guess its sort of the idea of "light one candle... rather than curse the darkness...."
the St. Seraphim quote... was simply recorded as one of that Russian Saints sayings or teachings , during his life
so anyway.. "Light one candle, rather than curse the darkness"... is sort of like.... well.. that candle is within yourself... its what St. Seraphim was talking about... "cursing the darkness".... is sort of like point a finger at the world... at Sodom and Gomorreah... finger wagging... and saying.. look how dark the world is
If we do too much finger waging at the darkness of the world.. sometimes we never get around to lighting that one candle... within us
and... surely... that one candle... has something to do with love... im thinking of St. Pauls beautiful words... about how little everything else is , spiritually, if it lacks love besides... you cant sweep the sea back with a broom.... but with a broom.. you can clean your own house
I am thinking about the verse from the Rubaiyat of Omar Kayam , from the section "Being and Nothingness".... "The moving finger writes upon the wall... and having writ.. move on... and all you piety shant bring it back.. to change a line.. nor all your tears remove, a half a word of it... the moving finger is our free-will choices... in the unfolding matrix of TIME... there is a sort of "karma" written by those actions...
which is like the "finger of God" writing upon the wall "Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin" which Prophet Daniel interpreted "You have been weighed, and found wanting..."
funny.. how the imagery of scales and weighing... haunts us in the scrpitures of World Religions...
In the Egyption pantheon.... isnt it Osiris who places the soul in a balance with a feather... and that is the Judgement of the Soul.. which way the balance tips... who knows that story?
hmmmm... is the Unanswerable Question... the "Unmoved Mover" of the Soul.. keeping it in constant dialectical motion?
Plato.. has a fascinating metaphor for the process of Dialectic.... likening it to the weavers loom,... with the warp and the woof... and the shuttle weaving back and forth...
students reading Plato's dialogs... often feel frustrates.. because they are not given any final..definitive answers regarding Truth, Beauty, etc.... but... it seems to be the Process itself of Inquiry which is valuable... not the conclusions...
Just like in the Old Testament... we see so many verses about the "Name of the Lord"... but we never seem to learn what that name is... even Jesus , in the Our Father.. says only,... "Hallowed by Thy Name"
Of course.. if God is eternal and Unchanging... then it is hard to understand emotions like Angering... or Forgiving.. or Regretting.. which imply change and temporality.... regarding the Godhead
was it Heraclitus who said... Man is the measure of all things.... ? ... sort of a foreshadowing, in antiquity... of the Antropic theories in Physics...
Meher Baba once said... "We all have fleeting moments... glimpses.. insights... revelations.. of perfection.. GodConsciousness,.. Union with the Divine... call it what you will... but .. what we desire is to make that experience, not fleeting... but abiding, and unending,.... Bliss...
of course... in this world of Dualities... Hot depends upon Cold.... Good depends upon Evil.. and vice versa.... without the Holocaust.. there are no martyrs... no saints.. even in Torah.. God says that He raised up Pharaoh,.. for His own purposes...
of course, Plato defines Philo-Sophia.... Love of Wisdom... as being dependend upon not POSSESSING WISDOM... FOR we do not seek, desire, yearn for, love... that which we POSSESS... so in that context.. Love has a LACK , an incompleteness, inherent in it.. as a driving force
of course... Love... as St. Paul uses the word... must be very different from Plato's sense of Philo-Sopia... because of remarks about.. The Greek philosophers... always seeking "some new thing".. and the Jews seeking miracles...
how interestng... I went searching just now for what St. Paul might have said on Love... but the passage I was thinking of was really about CHARITY... and says that Charity.. is greater than ..hmm Hope.. and Faith.. but also... the word CHARITY doesnt appear in Old Testament... or in Gospels... !!
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
hmmmm.... interesting... the Greek word translated as Charity... is AGAPE.. which means Love... no wonder those qualities sound like Love in Corinthians.. when it talks about Charity!
in the Old Testament... the first occurance of the word Love.. is when Isaac asks for a dish of savory meat,... which he LOVES....
Laches, Clotho, Atropos .. the three fates hmmmm.... another trinity... like the Hindu... Brahman - creator, Vishnu preserver, Shiva Destroyer.... or the Triple gem of Buddhism,... Buddha, Dharma, Sanga .....Enlightenment, Righteousness, Fellowship
And when we hate Hatred... what do we have?
