     THE KAYASTHAS

We belong to a community known as Kayasthas. It does not fit in one of the four varnas described by Manu.Over the ages main occupation of this community was associated with Pen/writing. The ancestors have worked as Munshis in the court or in business. The community boasts of being educated and belonging to middle class. We are the children of Lord CHITRAGUPT. It is said that when Lord Dharamraj ji was given the responsiblity of keeping an account of the actions of the human being by Lord Brahma, he requested for a colleague to help him in this great and complicated job. Brahmaji went into meditation for thousand years and upon opening his eyes found a man with pen and inkpot standing in front of him. He was called Kayasth, because he was born out of the body(kaya) of Lord Brahmaji. He was assigned the duties of helping Dharam rajji and was named Chitragupta. Lord Chitragupt had two wives named Irawati and Dakshina. Irawati bore 8 sons- named Charu, Sucharu, Chitr, Matiman, Himwan, Chitrcharu, Arun, and Atindri. Dakshina had 4 sons named- Bhanu, Vibhanu, Vishwabhanu, Virywan. The twelve children had established themselves in different parts of the country and descendents of each were given name according to their establishments. Their descendents were named as follows:

We worship Lord Chitragupta on special two occassions in a year. Both days fall on second tithi(day) of Hindu Calender. One comes two days after Deepawali and the other two days after Holi. The day is also known as Yam Dwitiya. On this day,pen and ink is aldo worshipped as these two items form the basis of our lively hood. In the photograph Lord Chitragupta also holds ink and pen. After the worship and puja, the story of the birth of the Lord, and his sons and the effect of worshipping on his day is told. The day after Deepawali is also known as Bhai Dooj i.e. the day of brothers.
