FORT AMHERST,ST.JOHN`S

This is a shot of the lighthouse at Fort Amerherst which is located in the "Narrows" which is the entrance to St.John`s harbour.It was the site of the first lighthouse in Newfoundland and it was also an important area for defence during the WW II against German U-boats.

Caribou herds like this are a common sight in the spring and fall as they migrate.This herd is situated near Trepassey and had me waiting for over an hour.

Cabot Tower/Signal Hill

Cabot Tower is located on Signal Hill which over looks the harbor and city of St.John`s. It is located atop the Narrows opposite of Fort Amherst.This was where Marconi received the first trans-atlantic telegraph message in North America.

Lassoing an Iceberg

These ships are the "cowboys of the sea". They lasso icebergs which are on a course for the oil rig and tow them into a different course to avoid the rig.

CAPE SPEAR LIGHTHOUSE

Cape Spear lighthouse is located on the most easterly point of land in all of North America and is the oldest standing lighthouse in the province.It is a national park and was opened in 1984 by prince Charles & princess Diana.Also present at the site are the remains of the defence bulwarks and artillery apparatus from the second world war.A must see place when visiting the province.If you are lucky you can also catch a glimpse of a humpback whale or iceberg.

The city of St. John`s is the oldest city in North America and celebrated it`s 500th birthday in 1998.This is a shot of the waterfront from Signal Hill.

Hibernia Oil Platform

The hibernia oil platform was completed in November of 1997 and stands 224 metres tall(735 ft).This is half the height of the Empire State Building.
The structure sits on the bottom of the ocean in the Grand Banks which is one of the foggiest places on the planet.
The rig is capable of producing 150,000 barrels/day of crude.
It is designed to withsatnd near huricane force winds, high seas, and impact from icebergs.
