[B] Probably the "William son of Gross," as expressed in the 1087 Domesday Books. Holder of: Bonnington, in County Kent, from Hugh de Montfort; Kelvedon Manor, Bockington Manor, in County Essex, from Hugh de Montfort; and Dagworth Manor, in County Suffolk, from Hugh de Montfort. Held Benton Hall, in County Essex, as Tenant-in-Chief, Lands of St. Edmond. Holder of Witham Manor, in County Essex, Lands of the King. Bonnington is about 12 miles north of Lydd.
[C] Mentioned in Sir Simon de Forneals will in Kent. Records clearly indicate that by 1281, two distinct Gross lines had developed: (22) William in Essex and (7) Reginald in Norfolk.
[D] Granted land in Ipswich in 1267.
[E] Owned lands in Essex, Hertford, Suffolk, and Norfolk. These lands were probably, at least in part, the same lands held by William son of Gross (see footnote [B]).
[F] Male line died out in 1368.
[H] First appeared (and first Gross) on Chamberlain's Account Book in 1439, eleven years after the book was established. Thus, it is likely that the Gross line moved to Lydd in (or close to) 1439 from some other location. One possibility is that they came from the Great Bentlegh area in Essex County (see footnote [DD]).
[I] There is no definitive or circumstantial evidence that the John Gross who died in Kelsale in 1504 was (334) John but it is a possibility. If so, then he moved from Lydd to Kelsale, perhaps after his known brother (271) Thomas died in 1501.
[J] If the father of (67) Thomas' nephews (102) William/(150) John was in fact (100) John as claimed by W-G, then (100) John was not the son of (63)(VII) William as claimed by W-G. Likewise, (100) John was not born in Nove, France as claimed by W-G since his apparent father (270) Laurence and possible father (334) John were living in Lydd during the period of (100) John's birth, i.e., the 1480's. This apparent error in W-G is supported by another error in which the W-G pedigree shows (10)(IV) Oliver (1) as the son of (28)(III) Hugh, and that (10)(IV) Oliver was the individual who took the family line to the "continent" (sometime shortly before the battle of Agincourt in 1415) where the births of (50)(V) Oliver (2), (57)(VI) William (1), (63)(VII) William (2), and (100)(VIII) John were born. There is no documented evidence that (10)(IV) Oliver was the son of (28)(III) Hugh. Thus, the Gross line from (23) Walter and (28) Hugh through (272) William, as claimed in this pedigree, apparently did not live on the continent but rather lived in the Ipswich area of Essex and the Lydd area of Kent during those 100 years.
[K] Apparently not listed in "Able Men of Suffolk in 1524" and thus had died by that date, thus agreeing with W-G. Since his sons were nephews of (67) Thomas, he had to be a brother to (67) Thomas.
[L] Based on [R], there is little doubt that (100) John and W-G (VIII) John in Windecker-Gross is the same individual.
[M] Relationship between (100) John and (102) William/(150) John from W-G pedigree. (100) John apparently left no will.
[N] Referenced as (67) Thomas' nephews and sons of his brother Lawrence in (67) Thomas' will of 1553.
[O] Referenced as (67) Thomas' nephews in (67) Thomas' will of 1553.
[P] Would have been too young (according to W-G birth dates) to be listed as able men of Suffolk in 1524.

[R] Names and christening dates of (150) John's children in Kelsale parish records match names and christening dates of (IX) John's children in Windecker-Gross. Thus, there is little doubt that (150) John and W-G (IX) John is the same individual.
[S] Father/son relationship between (100) John and (176) Thomas based on W-G pedigree.
[T] A widow when she died in 1576. Thus her husband is not yet identified with certainty.
[U] If the speculated birth dates of (339) Richard and (340) Thomas are reasonably correct, the possibilities for their place of origin, as suggested by wills and other valid records of the general time period, is fairly limited. The most likely candidate seems to be (272) William of Lydd because of family names Lawrence and Richard. In the late 1500's, a Lawrence Gross was living in Hampshire County, which is one county removed to the west from Kent County where (270) Lawrence Gross was living about 1500. The relative infrequency of the name Lawrence and Richard in English Gross records suggest that the Hampshire County Lawrence was possibly a descendent of the family group of which (270) Lawrence was a member and that the name Richard may also have been a family name in the Kent/Hampshire/Northampton families.
[V] Possibly Edmund the immigrant. He would have been 22 years old in 1658, a likely age for an indentured immigrant. Also was probably not married in 1658 which would account for no wife being listed as a co-immigrant in the Virginia records.
[BB] In Essex records thus far examined, Gross names cease to occur after 1384, with (330) William being the only Gross appearing until 1428. Thus, it appears that most of the Grosses had either died or left Essex by the 1380's. They may have (perhaps in the person of (272) William), moved to Lydd (see footnote [J]).
[CC] The family-member names William, Lawrence, John and Thomas in Lydd and then in Kelsale suggest that the Grosses in Lydd may have moved to the Kelsale area between 1500 and 1524.
[DD] Occurrences of Gross names and dates of events suggest that this group of Grosses may have moved into Northampton County shortly before 1530. This was the same general time period the Grosses may have moved from Lydd to the Kelsale area. The Northampton Grosses may have also come from the Lydd area.
[EE] William Le Gros was granted lands in Bentlege, Wykes, and Tendring, Essex Co., in 1281.
[FF] Sir William Le Gros inherited lands in London from Sir Simon De Forneals De Pelham, Kent in 1312.
[GG] Held lands in Hatfield Penere, Barham and Terlying in 1307/8.
