They were still in Arkansas in Jan 1881, when George's daughter, Mandy Alice was born. Some time after that, Jackson Vineyard went ahead to look for land in Texas. He never returned. It was assumed that he died or was killed on the trip. Jackson's family went on to Montague Co., TX with George and his family. 21 Apr 1883, Jane Vineyard married B. F. Clark. (Jane's second husband had killed his first wife.) He was very abusive to her. They moved from the Montague Co., TX area, leaving Jane's children with George and Catherine Vineyard. The family moved to Geigersville, Yell Co., AR, by 1880 when the Federal census was taken. This is where their eighth child, Mandy Alice was born. B, Maries Co., Reg., Missouri Militia, for 92 days. He was enrolled 9 Aug 1862 and relieved from duty 9 Nov 1862. He was then enrolled in Co. H, Maries Co., Battalion, 23 April 1863. He was mutered into service 1 May 1864. Catherine tried to get a Confederate Widow's pension from the state of Texas. She first applied Sept. 30, 1926 and triedunsucessfully until her death in 1934. "Rejection on the ground that the Maries County Enrolled Missouri Militia, the only organization in which it is alleged the soldier servied, was not mustered into the servide of the United States within the period of the Civil War. Elizabeth died July 26, 1924 in Bagnell, Missouri, at 74 years of age. Her body was interred in Freedom Cem., Maries Co., MO.. In the 1920 census, her father was listed was born in Kentucky and her mother as born in Indiana. Conflicting evidence states that David was born in MO, January 12, 1839. Both David and Jane Vineyard died in very sad ways. Not many members of David's family would talk about his death, but this is the way it was told to me (Velma Vineyard) by Edna Vineyard, whose mother was a close friend of Grandma Jane. I think it is a reliable source of information. Uncle Tom also talked about his father's death. Seemingly, David was very jealous of Jane. (He definitely had no reason to be.) He was jealous of one, Albert Boulware. Albert Boulware was working at the Vanderpool farm (David's sister) when David went down there and shot him while he was at the house for dinner. Thinking he had killed him and knowing the law would be coming after him, David went home and had Tom climb up in the shop to get strychnine for him, which he took. The law came for him and on the way to Vienna, David asked for a drink of water, which they gave him. They didn't know he had taken the strychnine. The strychnine wouldn't have killed him without the water. He died on his way to Vienna as a result of the poison. Albert Boulware was only wounded in the leg and didn't die. David died 9 July 1906 and is buried in the Williams (Maries) Cemetery in Maries County, MO, close to where he lived. He was a farmer and a blacksmith. Three Drown at Bagnell When Auto Plunges into Osage River 26 July 1924 On July 26, 1924 tragedy hit Bagnell ferry when Mrs. Jane Vineyard, Mrs. Henry Vineyard, and two year old son, Wayne Avery, of Dixon, drowned about one o'clock Saturday afternoon when a Star automobile carrying six persons ran off the ferry boat into 20 feet of water and three persons narrowly escaped death. The family was driving through to visit Fred Crismon and family who now reside on the Males farm near Bagnell south of the river. The dead are Mrs. Jane Vineyard, mother of Henry Vineyard, Mrs. Henry Vineyard, wife of the driver of the car, and the Vineyard baby, child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vineyard. His brother, David, and their sister, Margaret, were rescued, the last mentioned remaining in an unconscious condition for some time after she was dragged from the water. It was thought that she was injured possibly by the car rolling over her. The body of Mrs. Jane Vineyard was recovered immediately after the accident when her daughter was rescued, but efforts to revive her were unavailing. The body of the child was found floating near the Crismon farm a mile or so below Bagnell. On Monday morning the Bagnell residents used two boxes of dynamite in tearing up drifts in searching for bodies after the accident. Henry Vineyard, the driver of the car, said that the accident was due to the brakes not holding. The car was a new one which he recently bought. An effort was made by person who were on the ferry boat to stop the car when they saw it was not under control by throwing chunks under the wheels to try to catch the wheels. The water is swift on the Bagnell side of the river where the accident occurred and the current stride on the north bank. The car was taken from the river about 75 feet below the ferry landing. It had rolled over and over and was a total wreckage. The bodies were taken to Eldon and prepared for shipment to Dixon for burial. The Vineyards are farmers, and the accident is very regretable. One of the ladies who helped to revive Miss Vineyard at the Bagnell Hotel was Mrs. R. P. Howser. David Vineyard, one of the survivors of the accident, later moved to Miller County and served as county treasurer from 1952-1954. We moved out to Abernathy in Jan 27, 1927 and liven close to Abernathy every since. I am still living on our farm with our youngest son just accross the drive from me. About the Vineyard family Mr. V never told or talked very much about his family - his mother passed away before the Civil War - his father married again but I don't know the maiden name of his morther or stepmother - he had two brothers, Hiram & John, one sister Nancy, but all have passed on. All 4 my husban Bro & sist. have passed. He (my husband) was the last one to go so I have no one to go to to find out any but Mr. Vineyard said all that had an "e" in their name was kin to him. They came from Ireland and landed in Pennsylvania but I don't know what year. Mr. V. did have three older half Bros in Civil War so was his dad. Sorry I don't have any more about the family. He eased his pants on over the nail and went home and tried to explain how he got the nail. His mother had a terrible time trying to remove it. Then she soaked his knee in kerosene. One day the family was visiting relatives. They were all sitting on the porch talking. Wyile took a stick he had sharpened, and poked a nearby mule in the back of his leg. The mule kicked him in the face and broke his nose. Everyone ran over and asked if he was hurt. He was thinking it had nearly killed him. Wyile was probably working as soon as he could hold on to a hoe handle or drag a cotton sack. He went to work in a coal mine in Eastern Oklahoma when he was fourteen years old. He lied about his age to get the job. He disliked the coal mine. He said when the gas level got too high, and he was the smallest worker in the mine, he was sent through the tunnels to warn everyone to get out. After working there for a couple of years, he left, going to Brock in Carter County, Oklahoma, to work in the oilfields. His family soon followed him to Carter County, moving to Dillard. When Wylene was a few weeks old they moved back to Dillard to live with his parents for a few months. They then moved to Muenster, Texas, where they lived till Wylene was six months old. They came back to Dillard and Wyile built them what was called a "box" house there out of rig lumber. It had one window which tilted to one side, about four inches out of line. She had no curtains for the window. He did put a new floor in it. They lived there till Wylene was about two years old, when they moved back to Muenster. They moved back to Dillard and Wylie and Roy Kimbrell built a trailer house and pulled it to Borger, Texas, in August of 1936. Both couples and Wylene lived in it. It was terribly hot inside. The night they arrived in Borger it came a heavy rain. The trailer had a canvas roof, the rain came through, and they and everything inside was drenched. They spent all the next day drying everything out. Then they bought parrafin, melted it and sealed the canvas. While they were doing this, a man and came and told them they'd have to move off the vacant lot they were parked on. They moved to another vacant lot nearby, which was across the street from Bob Johnson's used car lot. No one ever bothered them there. There was an outhouse near the alley, they piped gas to the trailer, and they carried water from a house nearby, where a family named Gentry lived. They never charged them any thing to do this. This first day in Borger, Wyile and Roy go a job putting a roof on a bank building. They made forty cents an hour. When this job was finished, They went to work for the J. R. Stewart Construction Company, This was a pipeline construction company and they were again paid forty cents an hour. They worked for this company for quite a few years, traveling a lot. Wyile, Modell and Wylene stayed in Borger till about the first of June 1938, moving back to Muenster, Texas, three months before Joy was born. They first rented a house there, then Wyile wanted to move into a room of the house that Dick Elmores, the man he worked for lived in. Wednesday night before Joy was born on Saturday, Roy Lee Daniels, Dick Elmore's stepson caught on fire while nightwatching at a rig. He died Sunday night, July 3, 1938, the day after Joy was born. When Joy was nine days old, they moved back to Wilson, Oklahoma. Wyile put their possessions in their one-seat car, and Meril, Wyile's brother came and drove Modell and the children back. They stayed in Wilson a short time and moved back to Borger and into the homemade trailer again. On the way, they had to cross a river that was flooded, they waited till the next day when it went down and forded it. Lois and Roy had bought another small trailer for fifty dollars and parked it by the first one. Wyile and Modell and family went to Odessa, Texas, for five weeks, then to El Dorado, Arkansas. There they stayed in a tourist court, cabins built around a nightclub. They shared three rooms of a cabin with Lois and Roy. It was a kitchen and two bedrooms and a bathroom. There was another room that was rented to someone else. They went to bed and this woman came walking through the kitchen to the bathroom. They told her to get out and she said she had as much right as they did. They locked the door, with a slide lock. The woman shook the door until it came unlocked and came back in. After they got her out, they used an icepick to lock the door so she couldn't come back in. She banged on the door trying to get back in later, but couldn't. The next morning, after Wyile and Roy had left for work, a man came to the door and said he'd been rolled the night before. He first thought it was them till he talked to them and saw the children. They moved and had a one room apartment in Electra. Roy and Lois Kimbrell, Luxie and Bonnie Reed and Pearl and Golder Dowdy were also there. They were still working for J. R. Stewart Construction Company. They then moved to Camay, Texas, then back to Borger. They were traveling back to Borger on Joy's first birthday. They then moved back to Camay, taking the homemake trailer. Modell was very sick, running a high temperature. Milk was spilt in the car and flies were were all over the car. They got to Camay, it was so hot that they spread quilts under a tree because it was too hot to stay in the trailer. They moved back to Borger and soon Wyile decided to move back to Wilson. They bought a house two or three miles north of Dillard. Some people were moving away, and Wyile bought a house full of furniture for seven or eight dollars. They hadn't stayed there very long and he decided to move back to Borger. He loaded up the furniture and took it to Bob Hall's second hand store in Wilson and sold it. They got back to Borger the last of July or the first of August 1940 and moved into an apartment. About a month later they moved to Craig, Colorado, and stayed till just before Thanksgiving. They were back in Borger for Thanksgiving, 1940. The gears in their car tore out on the way back from Colorado. Wyile bought a Maroon 1939 Ford. It was in good shape and had good tires. This was during WWII and it was hard to buy tires. Wyile's boss kept wanting to buy the 1939 Ford, he finally sold it to him for seven hundred dollars. Wyile ended up buying another 1939 Ford, only white, for seven hundred dollars. It was in terrible shape. They bought their house on Brain Street in Borger, Texas, in the summer of 1941. They went to Ottawa, Kansas, Modell left Ottawa with the children and went back to Borger to put Wylene in school for her first year of school. The summer of 1942, the J. R. Stewart Company got a government contract, building an ammunition dump, about six miles out of Flagstaff. Wyile and Modell and Roy and Lois bought a tent and moved onto an Indian Reservation. They bought some old iron bedsteads and sewed sheets together and stuffed them with straw to make mattresses. They bought a sheephearder's stove, which was basically a tinbox. They had to build a special place to set it, since it got so hot. Joy got sick, so Modell took Wylene and her back to Borger after a few weeks. When school started Wylene was in the second grade. Later that school year, Wyile went on a job at Cisco, Texas, Modell and Joy went with him and Roy and Lois moved into their house on Brain street to take care of Wylene and keep her in school. When the got back, Wylene cried and said she had thought they were not coming back. They were in Wilson when Joy started to school in the first grade in 1944. They were back in Borger for the second semester. They were in Wilson, and Wyile was working for Rock Island Oil Company for all the 1945-1946 school term. This was the year Jo Dean was born, 2 January 1946. They bought eighty acres of land with a rundown house, six miles east of Wilson in May of 1946, for two thousand dollars. It was being leased out for one hundred dollars a year. On the 15th of December 1947, Jennifer was born, in Wilson. Soon after that, they moved back to Borger. They bought a house, but had a problem with the abstract and lost it. They moved to a little house on Cedar Street. Cedar Street later became a Highway. Thanksgiving of 1946, Modell's aunt Buena McClesky came for a visit and spent the night. Modell was getting quilts out of the top of the closet to make beds and felt a sting on her arm. She was bitten by a little brown spider. The next day was Sunday, and they were all at Lois and Roy's house. Modell wasvery flushed and running a high temperature. Lois took her to the hospital, they admitted her and packed her in ice, trying to get her extremely high temp. down. She was in the hospital for five days. This was in 1946, just after the end of WWII, penicillin was just being released, had it not been for her doctor getting some for her she would have died. Lois, who was living on Whittenberg Street and their mother, Winnie Crouch, who was living in an apartment on McGee Street, took turns coming over in the morning to get the Wylene and Joy off to school and take care of Jo Dean, who was eleven months old. One doctor released her, and when she went back the next day she saw his brother, who was also a doctor. he said she shouldn't have been released that soon. For a long time she would have to sit down often, when trying to do her housework, or she would pass out. The spider had bitten her on the inside of her left forearm, and it turned black and rotted out from her elbow to her wrist. She couldn't use that arm for a long time. At the end of that year, they moved back to Wilson, first living in a little "shotgun" house there. Later they moved in with Modell's parents until the first part of January. Jennifer was born 15 December 1947. On the first of the year, the lease was up on eighty acres of land. It had been leased out for a number of years when Wyile brought the land and he had honored that lease. Then people who were on the property refused to move. Wyile went out there to talk to the man. Wyile knew that he kept a a club in the crook of a tree in front of the house, so Wyile took his brother in law, Luxie Reed as a equalizer. They did fight, Wyile won, even thought he had a badly busted lip, the family moved out. Wyile and Modell moved into the house. At that time there was no electricity available, and they had to hand pump water from a well, and they heated the house with a woodstove. They did have a propane tank installed and used it to cook and to run a gas refrigerator. Jennifer was newborn, Jo Dean was two, Joy was nine and one half and Wylene was almost twelve. The house was old and drafty. In the winter Modell hung quilts over the doors opening onto the living room to keep it warm. She and the two little ones stayed in there through the day. They lived there for a year and a half, and then moved to a house in the Daube Oil camp south of Healdton. They lived there two years before moving back onto their land. During this time the old house, which was empty, burned. By this time electricity had been run from highway 70, which was a mile and a quarter north. So they bought a house south of Wilson and moved it onto their land, just north of where the old house set. It was a four room house, each room was fourteen foot square. There was a porch on the front and back, eight foot wide, running the width of the house and overhung by the roof and attic. They enclosed the back porch, making a kitchen and bathroom. Wylene Emerson married Paul Travis Farrar, who is the son of Frank Muggins and Dollie Bell (Rushings) Farrar. They had three children, Roland Keith who was born the 1st of February 1957, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their second child, Frank "Wesley", born the 2nd of April 1959, in Rankin, Texas. Susan Pauline, Wylene's the third child was born the 10th of August 1962, in Ogden, Utah. Paul and Wylene were divorced, and Wylene married Woodrow Alston in 1972. They were divorced in 1985. After Wylene and Woodrow separated, she returned to Oklahoma and went to school to be a LPN. After completing her LPN school she moved to Sour Lake, Texas, to be near her children and grandchildren. She was employed as a nurse in Beaumont, Texas, for a number of years before retiring in the fall of 1998. Joy Emerson married Billy Gene Adams on the 10th of March 1956. His parents were Louie Vassil and Susan Alice "Susie" (Griffin) Adams. Their first children were identical twins, Debra Sue "Debbie" and Diana Lynn Adams, who were born the 10th of October 1956 in Wilson, Oklahoma. Wyile "Craig" Adams was born the 18th of July 1958 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Pamela Joy "Pam" was born the 4th of September 1961, also in Ardmore. Billy was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for twenty-five years, until he retired in 1982. They had a telephone answering service they operated in their home in Healdton, Oklahoma. They sold the answering service in 1998. They now live next door in another of their houses. Jo Dean Emerson married Robert Leo Tiner, the son of Arnem Cleo and Mary Adah (Thomas) Tiner. They have two children. Robert Bradley "Brad", who was born the 20th of May 1972, in Duncan, Oklahoma. Rebecca Jo "Becky" was born in Midland, Texas on the 26th of August 1975. Jennifer married Elbert "Ray" Tynes. They have two children. Elbert Ray "Bert" was born the 30 October 1968, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Laura Beth was born on the 14th of September 1973, in Ardmore. Wyile suffered a stroke, after having his teeth pulled in June of 1980. He was bedfast for eight and a half years. Modell took care of him at home. They sold their home and property in 1985 and built a new home in Healdton, Oklahoma. Wyile died on the 31st of July 1988 in the Healdton Municipal Hospital.
