There is some confusion on who Jonathan married. I've seen him listed as being married to Jane Gray and living in Lincoln County, TN. The Jonathan that married Jane Gray is also listed as being the son of John Gross and Catherine Unknown. Jonathan, son of John and Eva, was born about 1803 in Claiborne County, TN. The birthdates for the children of Jonathan and Jane Gray are between the years 1814-1829 making Jonathan, son of John and Eva, too young to have fathered them. The second possiblity is that Jonathan married Nancy Unknown and moved to Missouri. There is an IGI Record for the marriage of a Jonathan Gross to Nancy Jane Unknown in 1830 Alabama. The census for Texas County, MO shows that some of the children by Jonathan and Nancy Unknown were born in Alabama. Research done by Annie Proctor shows that Jonathan, son of John and Eva, married Unknown Carter. Ms. Proctor's work is available at the Scottsboro City Library. My mother used to tell a story about Mary J. You have to know that my ma was a wonderful story teller and we didn't always know fact from fiction. But, as the story goes, Mr. Gross was killed sometime during the Civil War. But Mary's story goes, she was evidently left on the farm with the children. When the Yankee soldiers came through they pillaged and plundered everything they could. They even took her milk cow. As you can imagine this did not set too well. She didn't know what she was going to do. The longer she thought and worried the madder she became and she declared her own war on the north. She gathered up the kids and marched on the outfit that had stripped her home and farm. When she got there she went to the commanding officer and made her complaint. He was't going to do anything about it so she had the kids set up camp right next to him. She explained that she was not leaving without food and her cow. She and the kids would just stay with the group and he could feed them since she couldn't. He could not make her leave. After a few days his conscious got the best of him and the troops. They hitched up a wagon, loaded it with food and tied a milk cow behind it and gave her an escort home. According to Ma, Mary J. was pretty feisty all of her life. But, like I said, Ma's fact or fiction? It is a possible story ...

One of Biggers vicinity's oldest citizens, C. J. Gross, 74, succumbed very suddenly to a heart attack late Sunday evening in his home at Sha..er Eddy, three miles south of Biggers. Rev. T. M. wicher, Bigger Baptist church pastor, conducted his funeral services at Hitt Cemetery where interment took place on Monday afternoon. Surviving are is sons James and Lynn at Biggers and John C. of Corning, daughters, Mrs. Ida Morton, Houston, Mo., Mrs. Ruby Clardy, Waterloo, Ala., and Mrs. Selma Ramsey, Centralia, Wash., his brother (son?), Frederick, Porterville, Ca. and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On December 10, 1938, she married Arthur Scott Clements of Brinnon, WA. They had four children which included Philip (now deceased), Bob, Sharon, and Gary.

Wilma Worked during this time as a homemaker and also at the Chehalis Packing Company. They were married 27 years until his death on February 19, 1966.

Wilmoa married James Ben Browning on November 19, 1967. Along with him, she gained three stepchildren, James (Butch) Browning, Michael (Mickey) Browning (now deceased), and Kathy Sharpe. They were married 19 years at the time of his death.

In the last year of her life, she lived with her daughter on the Port Gamble Indian Reservation in Kingston. Wilma enjoyed visiting, playing Bingo, and senior citizen lunches.
