Descendants of John Gross
First Generation1. John1 Gross, son of Jacob Gross Sr. and Sabina-Lavina (Dorothy) (Unknown) Gross, was born in Northampton County, PA 1770. John died 1821 in Dodsonville, Jackson County, AL, at 51 years of age. His body was interred in Neal Field - No Marker, Jackson County, AL. He married Eva (Ofa) Marie Little in Claiborne County, TN, 1796. Eva was born 1780. Eva died bet. 1840-1850 in Dodsonville, Jackson County, AL, at 60 years of age. Her body was interred in Neal Field - No Marker, Jackson County, AL. JACOB GROSS SR. oldest son was JOHN who married (OFA) EVA MARIE LITTLE, who was also of German descent. JOHN and EVA floated down the Tennessee river in 1815-16 to Nickajack Cave near Jasper, Tenn., where they stayed about a year. In 1817, they floated on down the river to Larkins Landing where they stayed two or three years, cutting through the canebreaks, and then moved to the old Gross homeplace near the foot of Gunters Mountain and that was to bear his name in after years. They were supposed to have been accompanied by the Shells and the Chaddicks. JOHN and EVA came to Alabama and settled in Jackson County, AL. This was two years before Jackson County was formed in 1819. JOHN GROSS built the first grist mill on North Sauta Creek for the Chaddicks, and this mill was run many years later by his son JACOB and his grandson JOHN VERNON GROSS. JOHN GROSS died in 1821 and was buried in an unmarked grave in NEAL FIELD which is directly behind the home of Dr. Coleman, between Mink Creek and Gross cemetery and is covered by the water of Guntersville Lake. Uncle Billie Gross, grandson of John 1st and son of George and Lucinda Anderson, told Wallace Gross that Isaac, son of John 1st, was wounded during the Civil War and was brought to a hospital or first aid station near Woodville and the wound became infected and gangrene set in and he died. Two men tied his body on a mule and they started across the mountain to his home and cemetery and they became lost and ended up in Guffey Hollow. The body was in such condition that they decided to stop and one of them went on to the Gross home and some of Isaac's family came to Guffey Hollow and they decided to bury him there in Mitchell or Maple cemetery. According to the Guffeys, there is no marker. He was under the command of General Bragg and was wounded at Port Gibson. I believe that Isaac Gross is listed with his brother, David Gross, in the 1840 Jackson County, AL Census [P7]. Isaac never married.
