The old country stores have become virtually extinct in Sullivan County. Before the age of the chain stores and mass transportation, the country store was the commercial heart of rural communities. The stores were vital links in the communications process as they served as clearing houses for information of local happenings, politics, and family information. The stores also often served as postal stations where patrons received their mail since central post offices were not readily accessible. Country stores were possibly one of the three major social centers in many communities in addition to the local church and school. In some stores, the men gathered to play cards, to discuss current events, and to tell stories of by-gone days. At the country stores... Gerald Seneker, Piney Flats, said John Gross' store was a post station and country store. The former store building is located on Enterprise Road on the Clyde Warren property. Seneker said supplies for the store were hauled by wagon from the railroad depot at Piney Flats and by wagon from suppliers in Bristol. There was no refrigeration and meat sold by the stores was salted and cured. Butter was stored in wooden tubs in the coll basements of the stores, he said. The date the store was established is undetermined, but Virginia Hancher, Piney Flats, said this was the mustering site for local military units during the Civil War. Mrs. Irma Warren, Piney Flats, said her father, "Judge" Liburn Cartwright, operated the Gross store for a long periods. She said a section of the Gross homeplace located near her home, was built by Joseph (Jacob) Gross in 1852. Mrs. Warren said Joseph (Jacob) Cross [sic] was the first settler in the community. Seneker said Dalton Crussell also operated the store during the early 1920's. During this period Crussell resided in a small house located a short distance from the store. Source: SULLIVAN CO. Gross" information collected by Miss Carmel King (117 West Holston Ave., Johnson City, TN 37601) and compiled and edited by Mrs. Robert Louthan Wynne (7126 Walkway, Houston, TX 77036). May 1, 1971: P1 A BIT ABOUT SULLIVAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE Sullivan County, Tennesse was formed in 1779 from Washington County which was formed in 1777 and covered the entire area of what is now the state of Tennessee. The county seat of Sullivan County is Blountville and the county seat of Washington County is Jonesboro. The first permanent settlements made in what is now Sullivan County were made in 1769 by Haywood and Ramsey. The GROSS family was one of the very earliest to come to the county about the late 1700s. Other very early settlers were in the Andersons, Rheas, Rutledges, Shelbys, Maxwells, Looneys, McKinleys, McCorkles, Scotts, Hodges, Greggs, Torbetts, Dinsmores, Hughes, KINGS, Hogans, and Sharps. A study of Sullivan County census records of the 1700s with regard to the names Gielser, Gross and some Kings was made by the compiler of this genealogy. the earliest available census records are for the year of 1830 and list only the head of the family and the number of males and females living in the household between certain age brackets (i.e. under the age of five, from 5 to 10 years, from 10 to 15 years, etc.). After 1850 the census records list not only the head of the family but each member of the family by name, gives each person's age, his sex, his occupation and his place of birth. Much general information can be gained from a study of these census records and it is from these records that a reconstruction of the families of Adam and Mary Giesler, Jacob Giesler, and Jacob and Sarah Gross was made. The reader must keep in mind, however, that these records are often inaccurate with regard to spelling and ages and that they are old, faded and unbelievably difficult to read. ************************************************************************* 1840 Sullivan County, TN Census [P99]: Jacob Gross (Males) 1 0 1 0 0 0 1; (Females) 0 0 1 2 0 0 1. 1850 Sullivan County, TN Census [P101-557]: Jacob Gross 53 (gunsmith), Sarah 50, Jacob 18 (farmer), Eliza 8. 1860 Sullivan County, TN Census [HN 40-38-P62]: Alfred Gross 37 (farmer), Julia Ann 30 (KH), Sarah A. 12, Mary P. 10, David A. 8, Joseph A. 6, James B. 2, Robert F. 8/12, Jacob Gross 70 (gunsmith), Sarah 60 (KH), William 13. 1870 Sullivan County, TN Census [P447]: Jacob Gross isn't listed in the 1870 census, but his wife Sarah age 80 is listed in the household of Alfred and Julia Ann Gross.
