There is a conflict over who Andrew Gross married. There is a marriage record of a Thomas A. Gross to Elmira A. Ridgeway. Thomas A. Gross and Elmira A. Ridgeway were issued a marriage license on December 13, 1865 by W. T. May JP and were married on December 13, 1865 at the house of E.B. Ridgeway in Marshall County, AL by Rev. W. M. Baily. Some believe that this marriage record refers to Thomas Andrew Gross, son of George & Lucinda. His sister and sister-in-law, Eva and Sarah Gross, married Elmira Ridgeway's brothers, James S. and David C. Ridgeway. All evidence seems to point to Thomas J. Gross, son of Abraham & Rebecca, though. From census records, we know that Thomas J. Gross did marry a woman named Elmira A. who was born about 1838 in AL. We also know from census records that Elmira A. Ridgeway was born about 1838 in AL. Thomas J. and Elmira A.'s first child was born August 26, 1866 -- almost exactly 9 months after the marriage date for Thomas A. Gross & Elmira A. Ridgeway. If you think about it, "A" and "J" can sound the same. Also, I have not seen Andrew Gross' name listed as "Thomas" Andrew Gross in any records. I've wondered if Thomas A. Gross on the marriage certificate started the idea that his full name is Thomas Andrew. Follow my thinking for a moment...

Say someone is researching the Ridgeway family or just that branch of the Gross family (i.e. they have no interest in Thomas J. Gross and never look into the fact that he married a woman named Elmira or maybe they didn't look into the TX census since they were researching the Jackson/Marshall County area). They come across the marriage certificates for James Sidney Ridgeway, David C. Ridgeway, and Elmira A. Ridgeway, the children of Elijah B. & Clarissa H. Ridgeway. They notice that James & David marry Eva & Sarah Gross (Sarah (Vaughn) Gross is the widow of Andrew Gross, not his sister, Sarah Gross French), and that Elmira marries a Thomas A. Gross. Looking at the family of Eva & Sarah Gross, they notice they have a brother Andrew Gross and think "oh, that must be Thomas A. Gross who married Elmira with the 'A' standing for Andrew."

Or I could be wrong and his name is actually Thomas Andrew Gross and I just haven't found the papers that say it.

Gross' parents are listed as being born in TN and NC (which match George & Lucinda).

On June 6, 1893, B. D. Woodall appointed George E. Leman of Washington, D. C. as his attorney to seek a pension under the provisions of an Act of Congress approved July 4, 1884. The acknowledgement was before Jonathan Gross who was a Justice of the Peace in Marshall County, Alabama and witnessed by Daniel W. Jarrett and Seaborn T. Smith.

The application was rejected 27 September 1893 because there was no record of military service as alleged.

Jonathan Gross served as a 1st Sgt in the Co. "D", 48th Alabama Infantry along with James S. Ridgeway and G. W. Gross. Date of Enlistment: April 7, 1862; Enlistment info: Age 25, Alabama, Marshall County, Warrenton, Private; Single, Farmer; Engagement Info: Absent sick at Ceder Run 1862/08/09 through Suffolk 1863/05/03; Present: Gettysburg 1863/07/02; Severely Wounded: Gettysburg 1863/07/03; Absent wounded at Port Royal 1863/08/29 and to the end of the war. Funeral services were held January 31, 2002, at First United Methodist Church of Rainbow City for Miss Mamie A. Gross, 87, of Albertville, who passed away January 29, 2002. The Rev. Ron Shultz officiated. Interment followed in Rainbow Memorial Park. Collier-Butler Funeral Home directed.

Miss Gross was a native of Marshall County and a resident of Gadsden for 16 years. She was a veteran of WWII having served as a nurse in the United States Army. She was a member of Rainbow City First United Methodist Church. She retired from VA Hospital in Nashville having graduated from Holy Name of Jesus Hospital School of Nursing and a graduate of Vanderbilt and Peabody University. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Minnie Gross and brothers, Wallace and Robert Gross.

Miss Gross is survived by brother, Marcus Gross; nieces, Judith Ann Jacobs, Carolyn Gross Hodges, Nancy Gross Vazquez; nephews, Douglas Gross, Johnny Gross; seven great nieces and three great nephews; one great-great niece; two great-great nephews; sister-in-laws, Betty and Pearl Gross.

Honorary pallbearers were the staff and residents of Merrill Gardens of Albertville.
