First Generation1. Catherine1 Gross, daughter of Jacob Gross Sr. and Sabina-Lavina (Dorothy) (Unknown) Gross, was born in Sullivan County, NC abt. 1778. She married William Abraham Devault in Claiborne County, TN, bef. 1797. William was born in Washington County, VA about 1775. William died March 28, 1825 in Claiborne, Tennessee, at 49 years of age. Conflicting evidence states that he died in Claiborne, Tennessee, before October 8, 1855. In the book "Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia and Adjacent Counties Vol. II." compiled by Hattie Byrd Muncie Bales Copyright 1977 p. 920 it states: "Abraham Devault (Duval) was married to Catherine (Katherine) Gross, presumably the daughter of Jacob and Lavina Gross of Rockingham County, Virginia. On March 27, 1780 Jacob Gross and Lavina his wife of Rockingham County and State of Virginia conveyed 145 acres of land lying on the branch of Stony Run, a branch of the Shenandoah River . . . granted to the said Jacob August 3, 1771 (Rockingham was erected 1778) . . . to Jacob Harmon of the same County for the sum of four hundred pounds. His body was interred in Clark Cemetery, Wallen Creek, Lee Co., Virginia. He married twice. He married Darcus Carrol Pearson in Sullivan County, TN, about 1822. Darcus was born in Hawkins Co., Tennessee May 10, 1801. Darcus died February 2, 1861 in Lee Co Va, at 59 years of age. Her body was interred in Clark Cemetery, Wallen Creek, Lee Co., Virginia. Conflicting evidence states that Darcus was born in Sullivan County, TN, June 10, 1801. He married Barthena Brock August 7, 1862. Barthena was born 1818. 3. Elizabeth2 Devault (Catherine1 Gross) was born in Claiborne Co Tn 1800. Elizabeth died January 7, 1884 in Hawkins County, TN, at 83 years of age. She married Lawrence Pearson in Hawkins County, TN, December 20, 1825. Lawrence was born in Bucks Co Pa 1785. Lawrence was the son of Christian Pearson and Catherine (Unknown) Pearson. Lawrence died February 19, 1872 in Lee Valley Hawkins Tn, at 86 years of age. Laurence was buried in the Pearson Cemetary located in the Lees Valley Community. 12 miles north of Rogersville, Tn. on route 66. The cemetary is behind the house on the Clay Cope Farm he was buried in February 1872. This was the property of Laurence Pearson and could possibly have been the orginal farm the family purchased when they arrived from Bucks Co., Pa. Jacob Witt DaVault 50th Va Inf was a prisoner at Elmira having been captured at Spotsylvania on (as I recall) May 12, 1864. He was originally shipped to Maryland where, as family history has it, there was rumors of separating the officers from their men and so he removed his insignia and was sent to Elmira. Same oral history describes his tenure there as living in a pig pen. Many of his men died but he survived and lied about where his home was (actually Jonesville, Va) upon release. He refused to wear clothes colored blue the rest of his life. I am fascinated with his will to live as I have done a little research on his unit and find he was in several major engagements including Fort Donelson where he gain his officer's commision, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (at Culp's Hill) the Wilderness (where they shot so many holes in his purple blanket that he eventually threw it up into the branches of a tree) and finally Spotsylvania. As best as I can tell, by his units final defense of the apex of the Salient,they were reduced by over 75% of original strength and he was the last surviving officer. They were overrun by Grant's troops in what I understand was several hours of hand to hand combat in the darkness and he was captured. I am thankful for his tenacity as he did not sire a family until after the war and had he not persevered, I would not be here. Jacob Witt Davault and Rachel E. Love had the following children:
