First Generation

1. Catherine1 Gross, daughter of John Gross and Eva (Ofa) Marie Little, was born in Claiborne County, TN June 6, 1797. Catherine died September 4, 1875 in AL, at 78 years of age. Her body was interred in Gross Cemetery, Scottsboro, Jackson County, AL.

She married Thomas J. Evans in TN/AL, bet. 1815-1820. Thomas was born in TN May 19, 1796. Thomas died August 5, 1875 in AL, at 79 years of age. His body was interred in Gross Cemetery, Scottsboro, Jackson County, AL.

The Evans are listed as one of the early settlers of Dodsonville, AL along with the Grosses, Sampson Bishop, the McKameys, the Chadics, and the Skeltons. ("Jackson County History" by Robert Kennamer, page 152 -- See Jacob Gross for the full abstraction)

Thomas Evans of Jackson County, AL purchased 81 acres of land in Section 21 of T5-R5E on June 1, 1831.

Thomas Evans Sr. dec'd owed the estate/business of Jacob Gross & son, John Vernon Gross, $3.63 due 1876 as of January 24, 1881. Other amounts listed (original amount owed??) $2.75. (Source: Jackson County, AL Wills Bk. W; pages 39-46 -- LDS Film# 1018429)

There is a marriage record for a Thomas J. Evans to Mahalda Fry in 1839 in Marshall County, AL. Could he be one of the unknown sons of Thomas J. and Catherine (Gross) Evans? Also in the 1850 Jackson County, AL census on page 58B living near Thomas Evins, the Grosses, and the Shells were the following two families: (1) John Evins age 25 AL, Sarah age 17 AL, and William age 1 AL. (2) William Evins age 33 TN, Elizabeth age 26 TN, Nancy age 14 AL, Catharine age 8 AL, John age 6, and Annie age 2/12 AL. Could John & William be the two unknown sons of Thomas & Catharine (the ages match and it is possible that William was born before they arrived in AL)?

1830 Jackson County, AL Census [P1]: Thos. Evans (Males) 1 1 1 0 0 1 (Females) 1 0 0 0 0 1

1840 Jackson County, AL Census [P8]: Thomas Evans (Males) 0 1 2 1 1 0 1 (Females) 2 1 0 1 0 0 1 0 1 -- 11 total with 5 in Agriculture.

1850 Jackson County, AL Census [P57B-99]: Thomas Evins 57 (farmer), Catherine 53, George W. 20 (farmer), Johnathen 18 (student), Nelly 16, Eliza Jane 14.

1850 Jackson County, AL Agricultural Census: Thomas Evins -- 45 acres of improved land; 78 acres of unimproved land; 600 cash value of farm; 25 value of farm implements & machinery; 380 value of livestock.

1860 Jackson County, AL Census [P620-344]: Thomas Evans 65 (farmer), Catherine 63, Jonathan 28 (farmer), M.A. 21.

1870 Jackson County, AL Census [P739]: Thomas age 77 and Catherine age 74 are listed with their son, Jonathan Evans.

Catherine Gross and Thomas J. Evans had the following children:

child + 2 i. William2 Evans was born abt. 1817.

child + 3 ii. John P. Evans was born abt. 1824.

child 4 iii. (Unknown Female) Evans was born in AL abt. 1825.

child 5 iv. (Unknown Male) Evans was born in Jackson County, AL bet. 1825-1830.

child + 6 v. George W. Evans was born 1830.

child + 7 vi. Jonathan Evans was born February 13, 1832.

child + 8 vii. Ellen (Nellie) Eva Evans was born January 28, 1834.

child 9 viii. (Unknown Female) Evans was born in AL bet. 1835-1840. (Unknown died bef. 1850 in Jackson County, AL.

If my theory about William Evans [b. 1817 TN] being the oldest child of Thomas & Catherine is correct, then the unknown female [b. bet. 1835-1840] listed in household of Thomas in the 1840 Jackson County, AL census is probably Nancy Evans [b. abt. 1836], d/o William. William's wife in the 1850 census is too young to be the mother of Nancy. I'm guessing that his first wife had recently died and he is living with his parents.

child 10 ix. Eliza Jane Evans was born in AL 1836.

There is a marriage record for an Elizabeth Jane Evans to William Goforth on August 30, 1856 in Marshall County, AL. Could this be Eliza Jane Evans, d/o Thomas & Catherine? (Source: Marriage Records Marshall County, AL 1853-1857, page 257 -- LDS Film# 1035275)

I've also seen Stephen Douglas Kennamer, s/o Levi Kennamer & Nancy Agnes Busby, listed as being married on February 14, 1858 in Marshall County, AL to an Eliza Jane Evans (b. December 23, 1835 AL). I have found not found any record of the marriage (yet).

Second Generation

2. William2 Evans (Catherine1 Gross) was born in TN abt. 1817.

He married Elizabeth (Unknown) Evans aft. 1840. Elizabeth was born in TN 1824.

I believe that the oldest son of Thomas & Catherine (Gross) Evans might be William Evans. There is a William Evans listed near the Shells and Grosses and 12 houses from Thomas & Catherine's family in the 1850 Jackson County, AL census.

Also, looking at the ages of William Evans' children listed in the 1850 census - it appears that his wife, Elizabeth, was was too young to be the mother of Nancy. If you look at the 1840 census for Thomas & Catherine Evans, it appears they have a unknown daughter born between 1835-1840. I believe that it is very possible that this unknown female is actually Nancy Evans, daughter of William, and granddaughter of Thomas & Catherine. My theory is that William's first his wife had recently died and his living with his parents so that the women (mother/sister) could help with the young child. I've noticed that is often the case when the man is a widower with young children. In some cases, the youngest children would live relatives if the widower didn't live right next to family members.

William Evans of Jackson County, AL purchased 40.62 acres of land in Section 32 of T5-R5E on September 10, 1838; 40.12 acres of land in Section 21 of T5-R5E on October 10, 1840; and 40.03 acres of land in Section 32 of T1-R6E on December 1, 1859.

1850 Jackson County, AL Census [P58B-112]: William Evans 33 (farmer), Elizabeth 26, Nancy 14, Catharin 8, John 6 and Annie 2/12.

William Evans had the following child:

child 11 i. Nancy3 Evans was born in Jackson County, AL 1836.

William Evans and Elizabeth (Unknown) Evans had the following children:

child 12 ii. Catherine Evans was born in Jackson County, AL abt. 1842.

child 13 iii. John Evans was born in Jackson County, AL 1844.

child 14 iv. Annie Evans was born in Jackson County, AL 1850.

3. John P.2 Evans (Catherine1 Gross) was born in Jackson County, AL abt. 1824.

He married Sarah A. Gay in Marshall County, AL, August 3, 1848. Sarah was born in Jackson County, AL 1833. Sarah was the daughter of (Unknown) Gay and (Unknown) Shell.

I believe that the second/third oldest son of Thomas & Catherine (Gross) Evans might be John Evans. There is a John Evans listed near the Shells and Grosses and 11 houses from Thomas & Catherine's family in the 1850 Jackson County, AL census. (John is listed next to William Evans who I believe may be the oldest son of Thomas & Catherine).

From the estate records of John Shell, his granddaughter Sarah married John Evan(s) and moved to Mississippi (incorrect -- should be Missouri, Phelps/Texas County).

John Evans and Sarah Gay were issued a marriage license on August 3, 1848 in Marshall County, AL and were married on August 3, 1848 by Daniel Bohannon, JP (Source: "Alabama Records Vol. 96 - Marshall County, AL" compiled by Pauline Jones Gandrud pages 76-94; Marshall County, AL Marriage Records page 73)
