(***NOTE: There is some conflict on who the Thomas Gross listed on the marriage record refers to. Some believe that it refers to (Thomas?) Andrew Gross, son of George Gross and Lucinda Anderson. His sisters, Eva and Sarah Gross, married Elmira Ridgeway's brothers, James S. and David C. Ridgeway. All evidence seems to point to Thomas J. Gross, though. From census records, we know that Thomas J. Gross did marry a woman named Elmira A. who was born about 1838 in AL. We also know from census records that Elmira A. Ridgeway was born about 1838 in AL. Thomas J. and Elmira A.'s first child was born August 26, 1866 -- almost exactly 9 months after the marriage date for Thomas A. Gross & Elmira A. Ridgeway. If you think about it, "A" and "J" can sound the same. Also, I have not seen Andrew Gross' name listed as "Thomas" Andrew Gross in any records. I've wondered if Thomas A. Gross on the marriage certificate started the idea that his full name is Thomas Andrew.***)

Elmira was born in AL 1838. Elmira was the daughter of Elijah B. Ridgeway and Clarissa H. Tranham. Elmira died December 23, 1874 in Caldwell, Burleson County, TX, at 36 years of age. He married Eliza Georgia Reeves in Jackson County, AL, December 7, 1875.

Morgan. (Source: Marriage Records Jackson County, AL 1869-1876, page 530 -- LDS Film# 1018434)

Eliza was born in AL December 1849. Eliza was the daughter of William A. Reaves and Elizabeth Shaw. Eliza died April 14, 1917 in Carrizo Springs, Dimmit County, TX, at 67 years of age.

In some papers of Thomas J. Gross' given to me by Viola Schutte was the following document (on the back side were several calculations) (**Note: I believe that the J. D. Gross listed refer to Thomas' first cousin, John David Gross, s/o David Gross):

An Interview with William B. Gross, Chickasha, Oklahoma

My name is William B. Gross and I was born in Marshall County, Alabama, in 1879. I lived there until I took a wild notion to make a run into Oklahoma. I left my home in Alabama in 1903 and after traveling by train, in buggies, and on horse back, I finally landed in what is known as Beaver County.

At that time all of the Panhandle was called Beaver County, but later on it was divided up into three counties: Beaver, Texas, and Cimarron.

In 1903 I homesteaded on the old Babcock ranch, two hundred yards from the windmill, where there was the only well on the ranch. It was a big ranch. I was 17 miled from Hooker, 15 miles from Tyrone, and 19 miles from Liberal, Kansas.

The first thing I did when I got my claim of 160 staked off, was to dig a dugout.

This dugout was 5 ft wide, 8 ft long and 4 ft deep. It was 2 ft above the ground. I covered it with shiplap and tar paper which I hauled with my team and wagon from Liberal, Kansas and a little later on I put in a concrete floor which made a pretty neat little home. I lived in this place all alone.

We were required to live 6 months out of each year on our homestead for 3 years and after that they belonged to us. Our filing papers said that we could visit from our places but not to them. We had to consider our claims as our homes.

After I got my little home built I put in a supply of groceries and started farming. The first year I broke out 10 acres, putting in 9 acres of cane and 1 acre of watermelons.

Mr. Babcock said the land wouldn't produce anything but grass, but I raised enough cane to feed my team all year and I raised watermelons that weighed 70 and 80 pounds.

While I was tending to my crop the first year I got my mail at a little place named Nabisco, which was 3 miles from my place. It was just a small store and Post Office combined.

One time when I was in Liberal, Kansas, I bought a bicycle and I used it to ride to the Post Office and back. There were no roads so I had to ride it down a cow trail as there was one that went from my dugout to the Post Office.

After I laid my little crop by I went west into Liberal, Kansas and hired out to the Rock Island Railroad, on the section, for $1.25 per day. They only paid once a month. My cash had run low so I had to pawn my watch and suitcase for my first month's board and room which cost $20.00. I worked there the rest of that fall and winter and went back to my place in the early spring.

The first two years I was on my place there were no places to go on Sundays and holidays, for we had no schools, no churches or any other place to go. We would have bronco riding and cattle roping on Sundays and holidays.

This country where I homesteaded was just high rolling prairie; no timber at all and once in a great while you could see a small conttonwood tree which some rancher had planted beside a wind mill.

The closest cow trail to my place was called the Buffalo Trail. It came out of Texas and west into Dodge City, Kansas. There were thousands of head of cattle drives over that trail. Although the water supply wasn't very plentiful through there it was a short cut for the Big ranchers in Texas to reach Dodge City, Kansas, which was a large shipping point.

The Beaver River was seven miles from my place. It was called Beaver River there, and until it got to Woodward and then it was called the North Canadian River the rest of its course.

I lived on my place for 14 years and made a good living. I improved the place and put it in good shape and had a good house and good barns and sold out in 1917 for $12,000.00.

Lycourgus along with brother, Samuel Gross, cousin, James I. Boggess, Claude French Saunders and Will Taylor, all bachelors, traveled from Alabama to Oklahoma together in the late 1890s.

Lycourgus Gross of Beaver County, OK purchased 160 acres of land in Section 5 of T1N-R22E on February 10, 1910.

The following was written by LaVona (Gross) Harris -- Lycourgus' daughter:

"Lycourgus Vernon (Curg) Gross came from Scottsboro, Alabama, to El Reno, Oklahoma where he was employed by the telephone company. From there he came to Beaver County in 1903, and filed four miles south and one mile west of the town of Balko.

In 1906 he was married to Minnie May Gregory of Elk City. The Gregorys had moved to Oklahoma from Missouri. Following their marriage, the young couple came to Beaver County to make their home on their claim.

The trip to their new home was made by covered wagon. The main highlight of the trip being the fording of the Canadian River. There was a wagon trail across the river, but in places just off the trail there was quicksand. When the river was up at a ??, the trail was very hard to follow. This was the condition of the river when Curg and Minnie started across. About half-way across they passed a wagon that had gone down in the quicksand. Only the tongue of the wagon was sticking up out of the water. The family had been rescued, but the unfortunate party had had to cut the horses loose form the wagon, and all their belongings had gone down. A very frightened young couple, with a prayer in their hearts, made their way on across the river.

When they got to their new home, which had been fully described by the young husband, dirt floor and all, Minnie could not believe her eyes! The twelve foot by fourteen foot dugout looked much smaller than her mind had pictured it. She knew they could never get all their belongings inside, but of course they managed.

Their life was filled with early day joys and hardships, but in a little while homesickness overcame the young bride. The dugout had one window and by climbing upon a chair she could look out across the lonely prairie. Minnie said she spent quite a bit of time at that window crying, wishing she could see her folks. There was no question as to whether or not she could go see them. The mode of travel was too slow, and there were no funds for trips.

As time passed a family was started, friendships developed, and church and other community activities filled their time. Neighbors were very dear. Each helped the other in times of need. Trails across the prairie between homesites were made by visiting neighbors. Taffy pullings were pleasant memories to many.

Work on the farm began very early in the morning, in order that all chores would be finished and field work could start as soon as it was light enough to see. They worked as long as they could see in the evening.

Curg and Minnie had nine children, eight daughters and one son. Their second daughter, Tessa passed away at the age of two. The other children are these: Dolleta, Davis, Perryton, Texas; Valena Maxwell; Zella Lile; LaVona Harris, Balko, OK; Lorena Johnson, Perryton, Texas; Opal Gray, Borger, Texas; Leroy Gross, Amarillo, TX; and Irene Anderson, Lomita, California.

Things went fairly well for the family, and a frame house had replaced the dugout. Then the depression and the dust storms came. The family moved from the homestead in 1936. Mr. Gross departed this life in 1946 and his wife in 1957."

Lycourgus Gross and family was living in Beaver County, OK in 1920 (census: 4-17-6-82)

An Interview with Samuel M. Gross, Chickasha, Oklahoma

I was born February 9, 1875, in Alabama, sixty-three years ago, and came to the Indian Territory in 1898. The first place I landed was at El Reno, which place in 1898 was nothing but an Army Post. Here, practically all the soldiers from that post were used to stop the Indians when they went on the warpath.

The country around El Reno was what you would call flat prairie, covered with blue stem grass and lots of cattle; there were several ranches around there; two of them were John Samer Ranch and the Ross Ranch. I used to work on the Ross Ranch. I got $25.00 per month and room and board. Wages generally ran from $15.00 to $40.00 per month and room and board.

The main water supply came from dug wells and springs.

There were many Indians around El Reno. I have seen them with nothing on but their breech clout (sic) and a blanket thrown around them. I have actually seen them roast dry land terrapins by the wagon loads and eat them as soon as they stopped kicking.

There was lots of wild game acround El Reno; such as deer, turkey, prairie chickens, there were also lots of wild horses. I used to own one.

The old Chisholm Trail passed a little south of El Reno, across Powder Face Crossing, across the South Canadian River, tow or three miles below Bridge Port. This trail and crossing were traveled by a stage line that went west out to Cheyenne.

I finally moved father west and homsteaded forty miles Southeast of Cheyenne and 14 miles South of Elk City. I proved my homestead and finally sold it and came back east.

The kinds of "laws" we had then were US Marshals. The only one I knew was Doc Ramsey. I have lived in around Chickasha for 14 years. I am a concrete finisher and a farmer by trade.
