William "Stevens" is also shown, both for 450 acres on Matthews Creek and as agent for S. W. Stevens. In 1828, Ezekiel and Stephen W. Stephens appear in the Madison County, Georgia, Tax Digest. In addition to himself, Stephen W. Stephens is shown in behalf of William Stephens and Jonathan Stephens, minors, who owned 146 and 350 acres respectively. Joshua Stephens is also shown, and the digest notes that he owned property in Muscogee County.
      Joshua Stephens, father of William and Joshua Stephens of Tennessee and Georgia, was a son of Thomas Stephens who died in 1758 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. This Thomas Stephens had been baptized 12 March, 1711/12, in Abington Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia, and was a son of James Stephens who had himself been baptized there on 2 April, 1677. This James Stephens was a son of John Stephens of Abington Parish, who had been living there in 1671, but who evidently had died before the taking of the 1704 Quit Rents. This John Stephens married Mary Mumford and was father of not only of James but also of Edward Stephens (1681-c. 1727), Henry Stephens (1667- c. 1727), and Charles Stephens (1681-c. 1727). The four sons of John Stephens together produced thirty-eight grandchildren.
      James Stephens, born 1677, married first Sarah, surname unknown, and second Mary Bradburn. James fathered ten children: Catherine, who married Joseph Carter of Spotsylvania County; Margaret, who married Nathaniel Carter; Frances, born 1700/1; James, born 1703; John, born 1705/6; Jeremiah, born 1708; Rebecca, born 1710; Elizabeth, born 1710 (twin to Rebecca); Thomas, born 1711/12; and Joseph, born 1714.
      Thomas Stephens, son of James, was born 1711/12, Abington Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia. He died in 1758 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. While his first wife's name is unknown, he married second to Mary Addaman, widow of Thomas Addaman, whose will was proved in 1791 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Thomas Stephens fathered five known children: James Stephens; Joshua Stephens, who appears on the 1752 Lunenburg County Tithes List and who dies in Nash County, North Carolina, c. 1795; a daughter, who married William Hendrick; Thomas, who died in 1795, Mecklenburg County, Virginia; and John.
