HISTORY OF THE MIRROR UNIVERSE

The Earth Empire is the mirror counterpart of the United Federation of Planets, located in an alternate dimension seperate but connected via a weak dimensional barrier. Although similar in some respects to the UFP, the Earth Empire is frightingly different in many ways. Savage and brutal, the Earth Empire is ruled solely by the military doctrine of the Emperor and the Imperial Starfleet Command, who's headquarters is located on a fortress of a planet called Earth in the Sol system. The orgins of the Empire along with certain portions of Earth past history have been purposly hidden so as to manipulate certain facts to show the current regime in the best possible light. For example, the first war with the Klingon Empire has almost no information released about it due to fact that Imperial forces failed to dispose of the Klingons at that time. Similar "non-optimal" history is kept under wraps. However, other historical eras, such as the time periods dealing with the Roman Empire, The Nazi movement of 20th century, and the Optimal movement of the 21st century are regarded as almost legendary and are frequently refered to in educational supplements.

Imperial starships are almost exclusivly manned by humans thanks to Starfleet's racist "human only" doctrine. This policy has been relaxed somewhat due to the increased personnel losses suffered in the Second Klingon/Terran War. While only a handful of humaniod aliens (such as Vulcans and Andorians) gained positions of power in previous decades, they are appearing more and more in the upper command structures (although their mortality rate is still quite high). Obviously inhuman aliens are still barred from the Imperial Academy. Officers in Starfleet ascend in rank primarily through assassination of superior officers. While most try to get positions on larger vessels such as heavy cruisers coming out of the academy, a majority have to command smaller ships to prove their skill and loyalty before gaining that privilige. The Imperial Starfleet is vast and it needs to be due to the large expanses of territory the military must patrol. The Empire has also managed to keep the Orion Pirates at bay for the most part, although they are still a menace in some sectors. The numerous subject worlds of the empire are required to pay a yearly imperial tithe to Starfleet Command for the continued "services" of the Empire. Worlds that fail to do so are dealt with severly and harshly. Many worlds join the Empire against the will of their populaces, which require sizable garrisons on site to impose order. The Starfleet Security Division handles the internal and external security of the Empire as well as the recruitment & training of all security personnel posted on starships. The division borrows numerous ideals and training techniques from sources such as the Nazi Stormtroopers from the 20th century as well as the Optimal troops of the 21st century. This creates security personel almost fanatical in their devotion to Starfleet and it's ideals.

Due to an almost constant war footing and a desire to conquer their surrounding neighbors, the Earth Empire has managed to expand it's borders to the current area:

With the military and manufacturing might of the Empire and the optimal battle prowess of legendary captains such as Tiberius Kirk, the Klingon Empire eventually fell after 10 years of constant warfare in the Second Klingon/Terran War. Although the final retribution was bloody for the Klingons, the opertation proved most efficient and profitable since Imperial forces now controls 60% of the former Klingon Empire's territory. With the Klingons crushed, the next target to be destroyed was the Kzinti Combine, the Earth Empire's former ally against the Klingons.

In Y166, the Earth Empire used a genetically engineered Bio-megenic weapon (developed during the Second Klingon/Terran War) against the Kzinti Combine that only afflicts the feline Kzinti race. The operation, personally carried out by Tiberious Kirk on the ISS Enterprise, managed to released the bio-agent on the Kzinti Homeworld and several other key planets in the surrounding sector. Being highly contagious and having a near 100% fatality rate, billions of sentient life forms died within days. As a result, the Kzinti were virtually wiped out as a race. Imperial forces managed to break through and secure several Kzinti sectors. The Lyran Confederation, realizing that something was amiss when a number of plague ships penetrated the Lyran-Kzinti neutral zone, managed to mobilize enough vessels to secure several sectors of Kzinti space. And perhaps most surprising of all though was the actions of the Orion Pirates operating in Kzinti Territory (see below for more details). Any Kzinti that survived in the outer sectors also met a dire fate. In Earth Empire controlled territory, the bio-megenic agent was applied to other Kzinti controlled planets that were still unaffected, decimating their populations. Surprisingly, the same thing was allowed to occour in Lyran Confederation controlled areas wiping out their Kzinti populations located there. (Information about this was tightly controlled and these Lyran crimes against sentient lifeforms is still unknown to this day.)

The current target for conquest by the Earth Empire is the Romulan Star Empire. Imperial forces have made several major advances into Romulan Territory (see map above), where they've managed to capture several key Romulan manufacturing worlds. This key tactical victory gives the Empire 2 key items: access to Plasma torpedo technology and the secrets of the operation and manufacturing of the Romulan cloaking device! Another interesting event of note that occoured recently was the discovery of several large, stable wormholes in a classified sector of Earth Empire territory. After their discovery, the ships were briefly informed by energy beings (that appeared to be Organians) that the wormholes actually led to the "Ghost Universe" (the name the Imperials call the paraell universe discovered by Tiberius Kirk in Y156) and would be only be open for a limited but unspecified amount of time. Subsequent exploration of the wormholes proved the validaty of the Ogranian's claims. The Empire sent a task force to the Ghost Universe commanded by Admiral William Decker to conduct "Operation: Infiltration," but met with humiliating defeat. Other limited infiltration operations into the Ghost Universe are continuing however. There have been a number disturbing reports concerning Federation vessels entering through the wormholes to our universe. Such incursions will not be tolerated.

Brief Descriptions of the Other Races in the Mirror Universe

The Klingon Resistance

The Klingon Empire is no more. Qonos is a devestated world and it's people in chains. The trecharous terrans managed to rout the fleet after a decade long conflict, causing those ships that weren't destroyed or captured to escape to the Romulan Star Empire to set up a government in exile. The surviving Klingon ships were pressed into service as "subject vessels" to patrol and monitor the occupied Klingon territories (the crew is assured of loyalty through a variety of means including implanted agonizers for the crew and the use of an "off ship" self destruct on disloyal ships) . Subjugated by their cruel Starfleet overlords and weary of the numerous Imperial tithes, the Klingons still have one glimmer of hope: The Resistance. The Klingon Resistance is the remanants of the forces that stayed behind to continue the fight against Imperial forces by using guerilla warfare style tactics, striking from hidden stations throughout the territories. Although small in number, they have had a noticable effect on Imperial convoys and patrols in recent months.

Using the standard SFB Klingon ships, most of the Klingon subject and resistance ships are Light Cruisers, Destroyers and Frigates with only a handful of Heavy Cruisers & Dreadnoughts available. Most of the larger ships that survived left with the Emperor and Council to Romulan territory. Klingon resistance operatives continue to hire Orion/Kzinti mercenaries in their military operations paying with stolen terran credits & goods from raids.

The Romulan Star Empire

It is a dark time for the Empire. Engaged in a war instigated by the Terran Empire and the Gorn Hierarchy, Romulan forces have not fared well. Several key sectors have been lost along both borders and the remnants of the Emperor's Imperial fleet is barely holding their own in the conflict. With the loss of the worlds & starbases located in the captured territories, the Empire's industrial capacity has been drastically reduced, which makes Romulan military forces less effective in battle. However, the forces from the Klingon government in exile has proved most beneficial to the Romulan war effort, supplementing Romulan forces in combat. But on the whole, things haven't looked grimmer for the Romulan Empire.

Using the standard SFB Romulan ships, the only ships that should be available are: All Old Series Ships, All KR Series ships up to Light Cruiser sized hulls (the Klingon Empire was unable to deliver larger ships due to heavy losses from their drawn out war with the Earth Empire), and no New Series class of ships (as they are known in the ghost universe). However there are various shipbuilding projects underway to improve the fighting capability of the Old Series of Ships as well as the production (in limited quantities) of an advanced form of Romulan starship (the Mirror Romulan version of the New Series class of starship)

The Gorn Hierarchy

In the Mirror Universe, the Gorn Hierarchy is is a fairly brutal despotism ruled by the Overlord of Ghidhar and his vassals. Afflicted by a number of short but bloody civil wars, the Gorns are primarily concerned with their own affairs. Their conflicts were primarily focused on anhiliating their old nemesis, the Pavarians, and destroying any Romulans foolish enough to violate the gorn neutral zone. This all changed however in a fateful encounter on Cetis 4 when an Earth Empire Heavy Cruiser encountered hostile Gorn forces.

A powerful race called the Metrons forced the captain of the I.S.S. Enterprise, Tiberius Kirk, into combat with his Gorn counterpart. Kirk ultimatly failed the Metron's test of compassion when he slayed the Gorn Captain (although vids of the event became quite popular among Imperial personnel in the Empire). The story would've ended there except for one important fact. The Gorn Tiberius killed was no ordinary gorn. Hatched during a rare alignment of stars that occurs only once every few hundread years, he was marked by the Mistress of Fertility, the head of one of the Gorn species more important religions, as the next gorn messiah who would be a great spiritual leader and military commander. With his death at the hands of Tiberius, the Gorn Hierarchy secretly swore vengence but actually stopped the conflict with the Empire, stating that the Gorn captain was at fault for causing the incident. The Gorn navy was in no condition to take on the Terrans and win so the Hierarcy had to bide their time. The Earth Empire readily agreed since they already started their decades long conflict with the Klingons and didn't want to fight a war on another front.

Instead of attacking directly, the Overlord of Ghidhar secretly issued a proclomation for any Gorn captain and a majority of their crews that wished to engage Terran forces would get a "blessing of freedom" from the Overlord himself, essentially making Gorn naval ships covert privateers of the crown. Assisted by local Orion mercenaries, these gorn privateers would raid Empire facilities and supply convoys across the gorn-terran neutral zone, causing as much havoc as possible. If any gorn units were captured or destroyed, the Overlord of Ghidhar would simply state that they were renegades of the gorn navy. A majority of the gorn privateer captains came from several key groups of the gorn military (including the fanatical defenders of the egg and the infamous band of Gorn mercenaries known as the Knights Errant). These captains declared a holy crusade against the Earth Empire for Tiberious Kirk's heinous act of murder and have declare d that they will not rest until Tiberius is brought to justice.

As the raids continued, the Gorn government still managed to convince the Earth Empire that they were their allies. The Gorns even managed to forge an alliance with the Earth Empire, recently conducting a joint invasion of the Romulan Empire. The time has almost come for the Gorn to show their true intentions to the Earth Empire though. Increasing their shipbuilding operations, the Gorn Navy has finally reach a size where it can engage Earth Empire forces and expect a reasonable chance for success. When the Gorns do attack, the retribution is sure to be bloody.

All standard SFB gorn ships are available without restriction. One other interesting fact of note: The Gorns don't take prisoners; They devour them!!

The Lyran Confederation

The Lyran Confederation is the perfect example of an efficient confederation. All sectors work surprisingly well together and internal conflict (besides the renegades in the LDA) is almost unheard of. The confederation has made great gains in recent years. They are larger in size because of territory gains in the former Klingon & Kzinti empires (overall territory has increased by 50%) and shipbuilding and Starship R&D is at an all time high. This galactic superpower only has two real problems to deal with: the Hydran Imperium and Lyran Democratic Alliance. The Imperium, like the Confederation, has made great strides of late due, in part, to the fall of the Klingons and will need to be dealt with soon. The increased size of the LDA battle fleet also makes it a threat to the security of the Confederation.

All of the standard Lyran SFB ships are available. Due to the increased size and resources of the confederation, they are able to field larger and more advanced ships then their ghost universe counterpart.

The Hydran Imperium

Ruled by a brutal despot, the Hydran Imperium is a model of terror and efficiency. With an ample supply of troops that often fight to the death, the Imperium is a fearsome opponent to engage. Unlike it's ghost universe counterpart, the Imperium has actually had a more stable existence (if you can call it that) and a majority of Hydran territory has not seen foreign rule. Because of this, Hydran advances in Starship design have ben much more consistant and even, allowing the Imperium to field a large number of Starships. The Hydrans, like the Lyrans, are at a point in their galactic development where they will need to engage the Lyrans in battle. The LDA, while an important asset to Hydran interests in the past, has become perhaps too big and too ambitious to continue the way they're going. There may come a time where they may have to be wiped out like the rest of their kin.

All of the standard Hydran ships are available.

The Tholian Empire

The Tholians put down the seletorian rebellion and all subsequent efforts in their galaxy, thus their empire didn't fall, and there was no tholian exodus to form the Tholian holdfast. But the seletorian-tholian reformist rebellion still exists, waiting for the right opportunity to strike. Other than that, the Tholian Empire is exactly how it was described in earlier modules of SFB.

The Interstellar Commonwealth

The Interstellar Commonwealth of the Mirror Universe has just collaped due to a variety of economic and political factors (around Y168). With the disintigration of interstellar law & order, the various races that made up the Commonwealth now use the remnants of the ISC fleet, as well as their own unique "national" fleets, to engage in numerous civil wars to regain power & control of the Commonwealth. Needless to say, the former members of the ISC are focused on it's own internal problems and will rarely if ever get invovled with the Romulans or Gorns (except for the occassional border skirmishes in the neutral zone to keep them out of commonwealth territory).

All standard SFB ISC ships are available although they are divided up and scattered throughout the various sectors of the ISC. The individual national fleets of the various races of the ISC make up the bulk of fighting forces for each particular race (although these ships are often inferior to the latest ISC ships).

The Orion Pirates

The Orions pirates are virtually identical to the regular universe Orions except for a few things: 1. There is no Cluster cartel (see below), 2. Operations in Earth Empire territory are severly curtailed due to the large number of military vessels of the Empire (which do an exceptionally good job of protecting convoys and other valuable targets from Orion operatives), and 3. Through a combination of incredible luck & combat prowess, 2 cartels of the Orion Syndicate actually managed to secure the central sector surrounding the Kzinti Homeworld after the great Holocost that befell the Kzinti Combine.

Realizing that the Earth Empire was using a deadly bio-agent to decimate the Kzinti & conquer their territory more easily, the heads of the Lion's Heart & Daven cartels saw a once in a lifetime opportunity to capitialize on the events unfolding before them. Racing towards the Kzinti Homeworld with every ship they could muster, they arrived at the same time as the forward fleet elements of the Earth Empire (who already fought a running battle with Kzinti forces on the way there). Once there, the Orions contacted the surviving Kzinti Admiral (who commanded the last major Kzinti fleet in the sector) and proposed an alliance to defend the Kzinti homeworld sector from the Terran invaders. Seeing that allowing the Terrans to win would condem any survivors of the plague to certain death, the Kzinti Admiral agreed to the alliance and a titanic battle ensued, which the Kzinti & Orions eventually won. With the battle over, the Kzinti, realizing that with their people would soon be wiped out by the plague, agreed to a protectorate agreement with the Orions, giving them the use & operation of surviving planet & starbase facilities of the sector.

All standard SFB Orion ships are available to the Orions (except for Photon Torpedo option mounts, which have become a rare commodity even on Imperial Starships).

The Lyran Democractic Alliance

To escape the oppresive tyranny of the Lyran Confederation, two rebel county areas of the Lyran Alliance broke away & formed its own political unit, based on the ideals of democracy & freedom. With the collapse of the Klingon Empire, LDA forces were able to occupy several sectors of Klingon Territory, increasing their powerbase. They are surrounded by the Earth Empire, the Lyran Confederation, and the Hydran Imperium. Standard LDR ships are used for the Lyran Democratic Alliance (the Hydran Imperium gave the LDA the secrets of the Gatling Phaser in order for them to continue their battle against the Lyrans).

Who's Missing?

NO Wyn Star Cluster!
The Usurper was killed in his coup attempt while his forces were in retreat. Thus, there are no Wyn Star Cluster or any one else in the Radiation zone. And if anyone foolishly tries to explore the Radiation Zone they will find something unpleasant when they reach their destination.

NO Tholian Holdfast! (See above)

NO Andromadans!
For whatever reason, the Andromedans, if they exist in the Mirror Universe at all, will not invade the galaxy occupied by the Earth Empire.

NO Kzintis!
Due to the Earth Empire's use of a lethal bio-weapon against the Kzinti Combine, the Kzinti were almost wiped out as a race. Virtually the only Kzinti to survive the devestation were the crews stationed on the Kzinti warships. They are now are doomed to stay on their ships for the rest of their lives since to set foot on any other planet would risk exposure to the virus that most likely migrated there via others Starships. This has made all surviving Kzinti a zenophobic nomadic society, extremly wary to contact other life forms out of fear of contracting the virus. With the complete collapse of the support structure nessessary to operate the Kzinti fleet, few options for survival were left. Some Kzinti fought in suicidal attacks on Terran & Lyran forces. Others gathered what ships they could and in a mass exodus flew outward to the unexplored reaches of Kzinti space to find a new home. Some joined other Orion cartels while others threw in their lot with the Orion Protectorate forces (see above), which must cause them no end of torment (since they can see their homeworld but are unable to set foot on it).
