Garden railroads incorporate two hobbies-- gardening and model railroading. A model railroad mimics the appearance and functions of a actual railroad. Garden railroading consists of constructing and operating these small railroads. They are constructed with great detail, cosisting of such components as locomotives, cars, stations, bridges, natural landscape and miniature towns. A design incorporating tunnels, bridges, rivers, valleys, hills and villages, as well as scaled plants and shrubs makes the overall effect very realistic. Model railroads are built to scale, the comparison between the size of the model and the size of the actual railroad, or the prototype. For example, 1/2 inch of space in a G-scale railroad represents almost one foot in an actual railroad. We invite you to take in the sights and sounds of Garden Railroad, on display through February 25, 2001. Thank you for visiting Phipps conservatory and Botanical Gardens |
