Nettie's Summer Internship

My Summer O' Fun

This past summer I did an internship at the Virginia Marine Science Musuem in Virginia Beach.
I worked with the mammal department with the river otters and harbor seals.

I worked 16 hours a week to complete the 140 hour requirement as an intern with the mammal department.
Here is a list of some of the things I did:

Here I am with Pongo doing tactile during one of the seals feeding sessions. This helps him get used to having other people work with him.
The trainers use targets, buoys on the end of sticks, to get the seals to perform certain behaviors. Some of the behaviors the seals can do are waves, kisses, rolls, and barks on command.
The seals are fed at 10:15 and 3:15 everyday. They are fed a diet of herring.
This is one of the otters peeking through a hole in the door where they get fed outside.
The otters are fed a diet of chicken, fish, and mice. They also get fed twice a day. Once in the morning before the museum is open and once in the evening when the musuem closes. This is because the otters are usually fed inside in their kennels. They usually spend the night inside too. The otters are also trained using targets and shapes. They do have their moments but for the most part they are better trained then my dog!
