I could offer a rebuttal to some stuff put in my guestbook, but I'm going to be the bigger person and end the whole argument right here by not responding at all. Except maybe to say that Jackson wasn't all that and at least the Union officer who shot the brother was my favorite character in the movie. But I won't say anything like that. Because I'm going to be the bigger person! Tournament time is here again! I've been watching most of the day (well, since like 4 o'clock or so), there's been a few good games so far. I like UCLA some but I was really pulling for Hofstra by the end of that one. Right now Georgetown-Arkansas is on. Go Arkansas! Ooh, looks like Kent-Indiana(?) is on too, Go Kent! (used to live there for a little while) I got told today (yet again) that I'm going to turn into another crazy Old Man in another 30 years or so, and that I even look like him right now! Whatever! The "Old Man" is an affectionate term my friends and I use for a former professor of ours who teaches Civil War. Every year he takes us (whoever wants to go, actually) to a Civil War battlefield in the spring and fall semesters. We walk around the battlefield by day, drink lots of alcohol by night and have an all-around fun time! I've been going on these trips for, well 7 or 8 years or so, it's just something that infects you after awhile. That and I've always loved history and especially the Civil War, so we kinda go well together. I don't really know what I'm trying to say or where I'm going with this train of thought, so I'll (mercifully) end it here. Or maybe here. Or maybe even by telling you that Meg Ryan will show up and the armadillo will get mail. Trust me. I was going to end the whole entry but I just have to say how sickened I am by how.......something, I can't come up with the word right now..I am by our society sometimes. I could just be wrong again, but the general impression I get is that most people find Bobby Knight and his actions abhorrent. But does that matter for anything? No. Despite abusing college kids for years, he's going to get a job someplace doing it again, and now he's in a commercial as a kind, caring person that's supposed to be funny because it's the exact opposite of his image. This part I _know_ is just me, but BIG DEAL!! It sickens me that most people will watch the commercial and laugh and say "oh, that Bobby Knight, he's not such a bad guy after all!" I don't mean to pick on him alone, he's just the example that just got thrown into my face. There's tons of examples of this in sports, most of them being even worse that Bobby Knight. Athletes, especially star athletes always seem to be quickly forgiven (or forgotten) their sins because they can play a game pretty well. BIG DEAL! If I went to a party after a big game and had some part in shooting a couple of people to death, do you think I would get off? No. If I were a drug addict, do you think I would get 7 chances at coming back to my job? And then the only reason I can't have my job back after the 8th time isn't the fact that I got arrested for having illegal weapons in my car, but just that I've gotten too old to be effective? No. Athletes, despite their money and fame are people. It's time we started treating them the same way we treat anyone else. What to do when Knight comes knocking - ESPNET |
