Urethane "Rubber"
Urethane "Rubber" is not a natural substance and not technically a rubber.  It's a polymer that has the appearance and flexibility of natural latex rubber without its negative properties.
Natural latex rubber, which has been the traditional material for making eyecups, exudes sulfur compounds that elicit allergic reactions in a significant percentage of those who come into contact with it.  Redness, itching and even blistering of the skin are some of the allergic reactions that those sensitive people can experience when using a natural latex eyecup.
Natural latex is an organic material that dries out and rots with age.  The lifespan of a latex eyecup is limited and they become hard, brittle and crack along the flex lines.  They often begin to crumble very rapidly when used in harsh climatic conditions and when exposed to strong sunlight. The more that you use it - the faster it deteriorates.
Urethanes and Silicon Rubbers have an immensly long and useful lifespan, without losing their "rubbery" feel and flexibility.  Washing them in harsh soaps and detergents will not accellerate their deterioration as with latex, so they can be cleaned and sanitized often for rental cameras or film school loaners.  Private owners can clean their eyecups to remove the sweat and grime from the last shoot without worry about destroying their accessory.
Urethanes do produce carbon dioxide during the curing process (the same CO2 that you exhale) and can be distinguished from latex by the small bubbles that form within the casting and on the surface.  Those bubbles do not affect the life or durability of the material in normal use.
Urethanes can be adjusted in their formulation from very soft to extreme hardness without loss of their resistance to deterioration.  These eyecups are made to an A60 specification to provide adequate firmness to help protect the user from possible eye injury from impact.  No warrantee or guarantee against eye injury or other injury is offered or implied by this statement or any other specification, since the conditions of  use of the product is beyond the realm of the sellers control.
