Don't Lose Touch by Leslie Asbury
There once was a young man
Handsome, ambitious, and bright--
Who had and could get anything he wanted.
He was a special man
With depth of mind and depth of soul--
He was spiritual, and it showed to all those around him.
His ambition was a strong point
And he worked day and night--
His work was his life.
Work is important
He knew this to be true--
But he was forgetting something important: himself.
One night, he had a dream:
He got up in the middle of the night,
And he saw her face in the mirror.
She had the face of someone vaguely familiar
Soft, pretty, and caring--
And she began to speak and put images in his mind.
And he saw himself meditating by candlelight
Enjoying the blessings his devotion bestowed on him--
And the image changed.
He saw himself behind a desk full of papers
And a computer full of work on the screen in front of him--
Hurry, hurry, hurry... rush, rush, rush...
Work, sleep... work, sleep...
Grab a bite to eat--
Time for nothing else.
An occassional night out with the boys,
Pretty girl walks by, turns his noble head.
No time for that-- got to sleep, go to work.
Image changes: Back behind the desk.
Lights out, but a candle appears before him--
And behind it, a shadow, seated in lotus position.
The shadow becomes clear, and he's facing himself.
The mirror appears behind him, and the face of the girl--
She's crying.
"Look at yourself" the seated man says.
"You've betrayed me, which is betraying yourself.
You've lost touch with me."
These two men, past and present forms of the same man
Sat and conversed for the longest time--
Leaving the deskbound man speechless.
The meditating man vanished, leaving only the candle
And behind it, the mirror and the girl.
She looked sad, and said nothing.
Then she tilted her delicate face
And smiled as a tear ran down her cheek--
She opened her mouth to speak, and paused a second.
Then she spoke:
"Don't lose touch with yourself--
You're too special to forget who you are."
"You yourself know the importance of work
But more importantly, you know the importance
Of balance."
She stepped out of the mirror
And walked up to him--
Kissed him lightly, and touched him on the forehead.
He woke up in a cold sweat, heart racing, and gasping for air.
He heard a whisper: "Look next to you, my friend."
He saw nothing but an untouched pillow.
Then it dawned on him, not to let time slip away.
Then her voice said to him:
"See, you don't have everything..."
