This Is Her Life

Old B movies come to mind as "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"
Bring forth remembered images of dried up husks the bodies
Of the invaded becomes-- human skin drying up and wrinkling like
Old newspapers and the distinctive crackling sound that is heard as the
Life force is sucked from one's very being...

Hours upon hours staring at a screen in an empty cubicle--
Eyes glazing over at the endless beeps of answering machines
And telephone company recordings.
Evasive people shouting "Who is this?"
And those who hang up with no word said at all.
Endless rejections abound as the words
"Not interested" are heard hundreds of times each day,
And the victim sits in her cube, imagining herself
Drying up into a "pod person"...
But through the boredom and the misery is the realization
That this is her job, this is what she does day after day
As do so many like her.

This is her life-- the life of a telemarketer.
