The Living Years-- Then and Now (Unabridged)

Mike and the Mechanic's "The Living Years"
Plays over the radio, as a teenage girl
Listens to the words and cries-- Over the
Years she has lived this song, and she knows
It all too well.

Years pass and its the same over & again--
Trying to get her father to see who she is,
& love her in spite of their differences.

Her mother passes away and she wishes he
Was in her place-- she hurts him deeply when
She tells him these words, and their rift
Grows ever wider.

Months pass, & she realizes her father is
Growing no younger-- it's time to make amends,
Before the final verse comes true.

They grow closer, as close as can be for the
Two of them, & he shocks her one day, when
He tells her freely that he loves her, and that
He is proud of who she has become.

She is sad that it took all of her life, and
Most of his, for him to love her as she is.
And while he still wishes she were more
Like him, a message spoke silently to his heart,
Giving her peace at last.

Alabama's "The Living Years" plays on the radio--
Twenty years later, a middle aged woman sits with
A tear in her eye-- and it plays in her mind
That it took all this time-- But she is thankful and
Happy, that it truly is better late than never.

I love you, Dad!
