In the Future

Every morning she gets up, dreading to face another day
Knowing this day will be no better than the one before
And she stands there wondering what horrible new problems
Will she have to face today...
"Oh great", she muses to her self--
"More fine lines, and 3 more gray hairs...
I'm starting to look like the bride of Frankenstein"...

She realizes time has more than caught up with her as her
Looks have begun to fade over the years...
Faded memories of long-dead dreams haunt her as
She pulls back her graying hair and puts on her uniform...
Another day at the deadend job--
Another day in hell.

Could it be as bad as yesterday?
Her 15 year old son suspended from school-- again.
But hey, another typical day in her household,
Like the day he came home with his nose pierced,
And it matched his new tattoo so nicely!
He impregnated a third girl-- oh great!
Another day in court.
Caught with drugs in his locker-- one week after
Being released from alcohol rehab.

And what will it be today?
Another black eye when she tells her son "no"...
Tears come to her eyes as she remembers how hard
She tried....

But nothing was good enough.

Raising him alone without a father,
Raised in a home where he was disciplined,
But balanced out with lots of love....
In the beginning, they were close--
But as she feared, as few years after entering
Public school is when the nightmare began...

The riffraff friends, the bad attitude and
Disregard for all authority... she disciplined
Him with everything she could think of and then some...
All useless....

School suspensions, run-ins with the law...
Juvie court and probation....
Substance abuse and unprotected sex.
All the things she tried to protect him from,
But it happened anyway, as she faced these things
Alone...

So a tear runs down her cheek as she realizes what
A failure she has been... not wanting to face the
Horrors this day will bring, hoping that this day
Her son will come back to her, and wishing for the
Miraculous change that will never happen.
