Training tips There is nothing worse for you or your neighbors than a dog with bad behavior! To fight against this here are the guidelines.....
Chewing: Your puppy will chew because it is either bored or teething. To correct this...give your puppy 'acceptable' toys..like hard rubber, or even an ice cube. Never give your puppy an old shoe...it will encourage him to chew on a new shoe. Always remember to praise the proper behavior. Growling and biting: Most biting dogs began as growling puppies that were never corrected. Once a dog has learned to bite a human, he can never be trusted. When your puppy begins to growl, put him on his leash and give it a slight jerk and say "No". Then praise him when he stops. Puppies 'nip' when playing. When he bites, give the leash a slight jerk and say "No".If he continues to nip, stop playing. Excessive barking: Most dogs will bark to protect their territory, so some barking is ok. Stop excessive barking by giving him a stern "No"...then praise when he remains silent. Provide lots of distractions also...puppies also bark from boredom. Jumping up: If your puppy jumps up on people he meets, teach him "Off" and "Sit". As your puppy starts to jump up on someone, give the leash a slight tug and firmly say "Off". Tell him to sit....then praise him calmly. Begging: Your food sure does smell good! It is natural for your puppy to beg. It is also one of the hardest things to break once started. Feed your puppy before dinnertime and then ignore him when he begs. If he begs, give him a firm "No", confining to his crate during mealtime also helps. Chasing cars or people: This is a territorial thing, so it is hard to correct. Take him out on his leash and when he begins to run after something, jerk the leash and give a firm "No". The best solution is to keep your dog fenced in. |
