Signs your puppy is healthy The better you know your puppy...the better chance it has of remaining healthy. If you know your puppy's normal behavior, it's easy to notice a 'change' early on. The earlier things are detected, the better chance you have. Here are some things to look for..... Eyes: They should be clear and bright. Some slight discharge can be normal and wiped away with a damp cloth. A heavy discharge and you should notify your vet. Eyes should not be red or yellow. Ears: Ears should be clean and free from discharge and odor. Check weekly...more often if you have a breed that is prone to ear problems, like the cocker spaniel. Trim away any excess hair that might prevent air from getting into the ear. Ask you vet to show you how to clean the ears. Never, never use a cotton swab. Use a cotton ball or soft tissue. Mouth: The mouth and gums should be pink with no discoloration. Lips and gums should be free of sores. There should be no bad breath and teeth should be free of tartar. Start brushing the puppy's teeth as a baby. Nose: The nose should be clean and wet. No sores or discharge. Body and hair: Run your hands over the puppy often. Notify your vet immediately if you notice any lumps or tumor. Check often for fleas and ticks. A normal coat is shinney and think. No bare patches or dandruff. Legs: Check for swollen joints. Check the feet, between the toes, for excess hair or objects caught in there. Check the condition of the nails. They should be kept trimmed. See your local groomer or vet. Many do this for a nominal fee...or can teach you to trim them. Anus: Should be free of swelling and intestinal parasites. Scooting on the ground may be a sign of swollen glands. See your vet if you notice anything unusual. |
