Spay or Neuter Unless you get a purebred and plan on breeding...spaying or neutering is the best option. Millions of puppies and dogs are euthanized each year due to overpopulation. There are just not enough homes to keep us all. If you are going to breed...be responsible. Do not 'overbreed' you dog. Before you breed, be sure you can accept the responsibility of caring for the puppies (shots, etc.) and placing them in good homes. Spaying Spaying is the surgical removal of the overies and uterus. It is usually done and your puppy is home the same day. (Depending on the age and condition of the dog, your vet may wish to keep her longer) Spaying should be done before the first heat cycle. Ask your vet about the best age. Spaying your female will help to eliminate some serious health problems as she ages. An unspayed female has an increased rick of uterine infections, mammary tumors and more. If you miss that first heat cycle, or choose not to spay your female, you will have to keep her confined while she is in heat. Neutering This is surgical castration of the testicles. In most cases, your male is home the same day with only mild soreness. Ask your vet about the proper age to neuter your puppy. Neutering will calm your male and reduce the urge to roam. It will also reduce the risk of prostate infections or prostate cancer in the future. Please......spay or neuter your puppy..it's the responsible thing to do! |
