Tips for a healthy coat

Most well fed, healthy dogs will have a great coat. But proper grooming is essential. Not only will grooming keep that great coat, but it's also great for bonding. Spend some time primping and pampering your dog. Not only will he look great but you will get closer too!

There are 4 keys to a shiny and healthy coat.

  • Proper nutrition. Up to 20% of your dogs nutrients in food go to his coat. Your dog must be fed a balanced diet.

  • Genetics. Expensive shampoos can help, but if your dog wasn't born with a great coat odds are he'll never have one.

  • Health. The skin and coat are a reflection of the dog's inner health. Be sure your dog gets regular check-ups.

  • Grooming. Regular and frequent grooming will keep your dog smell and looking his best.

Shampoo -

Never use human shampoo, household cleaners or dish soap to bathe your dog. Use a specialy formulated shampoo made just for them. The guidelines are the same as for your own hair. Shampoo for your dog comes in 'normal', 'oily' and 'dry' too! Use a medicated shampoo only when directed to by your vet. If you notice scratching or flaking, consult your vet, there may be an underlying health problem.

For those breeds (like me!) that have a long, full coat. A detangler or creme rinse may be necessary. These can be purchased at your local pet store.

Supplements -

Consult your vet before adding anything to your dog's diet. Many products are made, but it is always wise to check with your vet first to access your dog's health and the need for supplements.

Brushing and bathing -

These are essential to a healthy coat! Brushing stimulates the hair growth and gets rid of those nasty tangles! Depending on your breed and lifestyle, bathing can be done every eight weeks to once a month. There are dry shampoos that can be used in between bathing too. Here are some great tips:

  • Really lather that dog! Shampoo at least twice, maybe even 3 times.

  • Rinse, rinse, rinse! Be sure you get all the soap out. Shampoo left in can cause dry skin and flaking.

  • Don't spray water directly in your dog's face.

  • Always brush your dog well before bathing. If you have any tangles, the water will just 'tighten' them.

  • Brush thoroughly! There are different brushes made for different coats. Some longer coats may require a comb also.

Groom weekly!

Some dogs need more grooming than once a week....like my breed the cocker spaniel. Other breeds, like the Labrador require less. Once a week is good no matter what breed you have. Grooming not only helps the bonding prosess, but also keeps you abreast of any changes in your dog...like lumps, skin problems, etc.

(During my grooming time...every other day...I get combed and brushed....ears cleaned, nails checked, and so on)

Here are some tips:

  • Set aside the same time every week and stick to it....we like routine!

  • Notice the time you have. A cocker like me or a poodle will require longer to groom than a short-haired breed.

  • Make it fun! I love to be brushed (not really fond of the ear cleaning though). As you are grooming...talk to your dog, make it a special time. Give us a treat when we're finished!

I have been getting brushed at least 3 times a week since I was a baby and I love it. (I usually fall asleep!) I see that brush and come running!

With a little extra care....you too can have a great coat!
