With mass production of the GM in progress, the Earth Federation began gathering its forces for a massive space offensive against the Duchy of Zeon's home territory. In addition to cranking out huge quantities of mobile suits, the Federal Forces also launched an intensive training program, teaching conventional fighter pilots to operate these new weapons. A special trainer version of the GM was created for this purpose.
The two-seater GM Trainer featured a windowed instructor's cockpit located above the normal pilot's cockpit. Its construction and performance were essentially identical to the standard version, but weaker armor materials were used for budget reasons, rendering the GM Trainer unsuitable for actual combat. Aside from training exercises, it was used only for manual labor and engineering work.
