Earth Federation Mobile Suit
RX-77-3 Guncannon Heavy Arms Type

During the development of the GM Cannon, the Federation's engineers kept working on the original RX-77-2 Guncannon design. A third version of the Guncannon, dubbed the Heavy Arms Type, was produced for testing purposes.

Previous incarnations of the Guncannon and GM Cannon were designed as support units, to supplement teams of close-combat mobile suits. The Heavy Arms Type, on the other hand, was intended to be a self-sufficient mobile suit that could be used to form all-Guncannon teams. Its armor and armament were improved, with modified cannons and a handy grenade rack. The Heavy Arms Type was later used as a testbed for a new type of beam cannon.

RX-77-4 Guncannon II

Towards the end of the One Year War, the Federation's mobile suit developers revisited the Guncannon design for a last round of improvements. After successfully testing it with the RX-77-3 Guncannon Heavy Arms Type, they equipped the new Guncannon II with a rapid-fire beam cannon and matching multipurpose precision sight, finally eliminating the recoil problems caused by the previous versions' shell-firing cannons. With its reduced weight and improved thrusters, the Guncannon II was also able to fly short distances by making rocket-assisted jumps.

The Guncannon II was completed at the recaptured California Base, during the last two weeks of the war. At least eight units were constructed for testing purposes, some of which fought in the Federation's North American offensive.
