In the Zeon military, it was not unheard of for even high-ranking officers to fight in the front lines as mobile suit pilots, and some colonels and generals maintained customized mobile suits for this purpose. However, judging from the ornate decorations and engravings of Colonel Ma Kube's Gouf, it appears that this lavishly ornamented mobile suit served mostly as a status symbol.
An officer of the Mobile Assault Force reporting directly to Major General Kishiria Zabi, Ma Kube was the commander of Zeon's Odessa mining base. The spearhead antenna on his Gouf was Ma Kube's personal trademark, and was later incorporated into the design of the YMS-15 Gyan.
