The Light Armor was one of several limited-production GM variants created for the use of skilled Federal Forces pilots. Designed for hit-and-run raiding missions, its armor was reduced to the bare minimum in order to increase its acceleration and manueverability. The Light Armor's beam gun, based on the same E-cap technology as the Gundam's beam rifle, could fire only a limited number of shots but was substantially more powerful than the GM's standard beam spray gun.
This lightweight, speedy GM handled much like a conventional space fighter, making it easier for experienced pilots to adapt to their new role as mobile suit operators. It's recorded that Captain Gary Rogers was one of the pilots who used the Light Armor type.
