Since the start of the One Year War, the Zaku II has been the backbone of Zeon's mobile suit forces. The F type, which accounts for more than half the total production run of the Zaku II, is the archetypal Zaku. Though it can be used on Earth, the F type's primary function is space combat, and most of Zeon's terrestrial forces are equipped with the J type Zaku II instead (a minor distinction, since the F and J types are externally identical).
The F type Zaku II was introduced a couple of months into the war, as a replacement for the previous C type. Upon receiving this new model, many of the Zeon mobile suit pilots who distinguished themselves during the early days of the war adopted their own distinctive personal colors. Shown here are the colors of Captain Johnny Ridden of the Mobile Assault Force, and 1st Lieutenant Shin Matsunaga of the Space Attack Force.
