On
the picture the new European oilwrestling champion in the
Deste Büyük Boy class: Kadir Yilmaz (18) from
Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The picture actually was
taken the year before he gained his title, during the
Amsterdam KIRKPINAR of 1998.
YEAR 28 (OKTOBER 1999)
KADiR YILMAZ FOUGHT AS A LION
New oilwrestling champ from Amsterdam
The first recorded Olympic wrestling match
occurred in the Olympics in 708 BC. Wrestling was highly
valued as a form of military exercise without weapons.
Wrestling is mankinds universal combat sport, and the
Turks and Persians are known as the world s finest
wrestlers. The man to man battles display power, courage
and muscle to muscle struggle.
By Mohamed el-Fers
The muscled glory of traditional Turkish oiled
wrestling is captured in the MokumTV documentary ´Most
Macho of All Sports´. Yagli Güres (oil-coated
wrestling) is unique and highly esthetic. The history
links straight back to a millennium BC, but the KIRKPINAR
as we know it now, started in 1360 AC as a means of
whipping the Ottoman troops into shape. Clad only in
(mostly leather) pants, sweaty bodies drenched in olive
oil, wrestle fight and rage at each other. Last year the
17 year old Kadir Yilmaz from Amsterdam entered for the
first time the oilwrestling-competition, and it was all
over after the first round. This year, well prepared, he
knocked out all the competitors in his class. For the
first time in centuries of history of this ultra ancient
sport the winner came from Holland. Surrounded by
reporters he told to be happy that his serious
preparation for this match worked out well. And Kadir was
offered a real kispet, the traditional leather pants.
Now every year during the Edirne KIRKPINAR more than
1,000 oilwrestlers show up and tens of thousands of
spectators cheer them on, or boo them if a match gets
boring. Outside Turkey the real thing is that great
KIRKPINAR of Amsterdam, held every year in September.
This most prestigious oil wrestling match of Western
Europe saw Gengiz Elbeye get hold on the European title
before he became the champ of the Edirne Kirkpinar to
grab the Worldtitle. from Ahmet Tasçi in 1998. During
the KIRKPINAR of Amsterdam Kadir Yilmaz fought his first
match, which was a prominent part in the documentary ´Most
Macho of All Sports´. Televised by MokumTV the night
before the Amsterdam KIRKPINAR of 1999 resulted in a huge
turnout for this event and a remarkable popularity among
the spectators. That day Kadir Yilmaz was one of the
wrestlers that showed up early and was called for the
camera of MokumTV. Beside his great wrestling, Kadir now
mastered the traditional ´peshrev´, an age old form of
warming up before the actual fight. His ´peshrev´ made
the organizers decide to introduce a special price for
the best peshrev next year. After Kadir Yilmaz became
Euro-champion camera teams pushed over him.
