cemetery). 12.00 Friday Prayer with loads of oilwrestlers in the Selimiye mosque. If you are non-moslim, behave discrete and stay at the backsite. 15.00 Opening Kirkpinar. No entrance fee this first day. See last years champion Vedat Ergin waving the flag at the head of the Pehlivan Procession. Bouts are held from 3 to 6 p.m. The Sarayici stadium is just more than a mile from Edirne centre. Grab a cab and say "Sarai-it-shi" Evening: Open-air concerts in front of the Selimiye and at the Sarayici Güres Alani.

Just two weeks after the European Championship in Amsterdam 2001 the Dutch went to the Edirne Kirkpinar in Turkey!
The Edirne delegation of Türkevi Amsterdam (the organization that brought Oilwrestling to Europe and made the Amsterdam Kirkpinar second to that of Edirne) gave Sunday a pressconference, revealing that the Amsterdam Kirkpinar 2002 will be held on the 2nd of June. The president of the Turkish Oilwrestling Federation, Mehmet Ayhan was in Amsterdam head of the Turkish delegation.
Beside the Dutch delegation well are wrestlers who gained their fame at the Amsterdam Kirkpinar. Ready to enter worlds greatest oilwrestling-arena are Emir Barhan and Kadir Yilmaz, Yilmaz, the 1999 Euro-Champion lost his title last year when he was beaten by Dutch oilwrestler Melvin Witteveen. In the Amsterdam Kirkpinar he was absent due to his preparation for Edirne. Wiiteveen himself was rejected in 2000 in Edirne as it is the NATIONAL TURKISH championship in oilwrestling.
