When the 33 headpehlivans started at the 640th Edirne Kirkpinar, Ahmet Tasçi of Karamursel just needer 6 minutes to send Ali Bulut back to Ankara. The other favorite for the title, "Antalyali" Cengiz Elbeye needed 18 minutes to get hold on the Man from the city of Ordu, Mükerrem Kiyi.

The final day the man who challenged Tasçi 2 times, Cengiz Elbeye, was defeated in the quarter final by Hasan Tuna.

The final between Vedat Ergin and Ahmet Tasçi lasted the full 40 minutes, and was after a short break prolonged for another five minutes. To wrestle for points. Tasçi before the Edirne Kirkpinar told the press: "I will win my 10th championship at the Edirne Kirkpinar!"
He didn´t. At the end of that undisided third prolongment The Ox gave up, leaving the title to Ergin.

Beside the Dutch delegation well are wrestlers who gained their fame at the Amsterdam Kirkpinar WERE PRESENT AT THE EDIRNE 2001. Ready to enter worlds greatest oilwrestling-arena were Emir Barhan and Kadir Yilmaz, Yilmaz, the 1999 Euro-Champion lost his title last year when he was beaten by Dutch oilwrestler Melvin Witteveen. In the Amsterdam Kirkpinar he was absent due to his preparation for Edirne. Wiiteveen himself was rejected last year in Edirne as it is the NATIONAL TURKISH championship in oilwrestling. Yilmaz is with reporters from the main daily Telegraaf (Ruud van der Linden) and also be followed by the Algemeen Dagblad of the Netherlands.
